What annoys me is that our policy wonks don't grapple at all with how to restore this magnet. It's like housing affordability is an ethereal feature, forever lost now.

Mr Savoie is a legend. Though it’s interesting that he names the maritimes huge pull of cheap living, and then doesn’t seem to reflect on how to recreate those conditions
Kaohsiung’s HSR station is nearly on the edge of the city
Looking at Edmontons continued success in ramping up missing middle and think about how Halifax could’ve done more

Edmonton's housing momentum didn't stop at the end of 2025.
Q1 2026 data is in and Edmonton is on track for another strong year of homebuilding in the places people want to live. The rowhome revolution continues. 🧵

Leaving Halifax? I'd be curious your feel on the "fullness" throughout the journey
In my view the main problem is its length, a 1,300 km journey where delays compound, and much of through scarcely populated rural NB and Quebec. The Halifax to Moncton bit works fine
Ive written before about the ocean. It is not worth saving. It is not well used.
Right, that's why mine connected to the ferry in pictou, best chance at getting islanders on board
Similar idea to what I wrote about last summer, Via's Ocean service is bad, and doesn't even try to serve the Maritimes actual population centers

Two boxes with arrows looping between. The first box says "These shoebox condos are gross. Stop building them. We need more family-sized units!" And arrow labelled "Oppose this building" points to a second box, which reads "These are luxury condos. Stop building them. We need starter homes." The arrow pointing back to the first box also says "Oppose this building".
Reminder that this “glut” of small units was approved under a planning process that took ~2.5 years to complete. Almost like that process is designed to allay the concerns of people who already own homes and has zero to do with the new homes themselves. www.thestar.com/real-estate/...
Worried about « household » definition here. Someone at 30 living with parents isn’t a household yet….

Speaking from experience now it appears Ottawa's LRT is lower capacity bus often times
What I imagine for every Robie street LRT idea...

Oh my god Calgary's mayor 🥲

Municipal politicians are routinely extremely destructive and bad faith with no consequences, because their voters bear none of the consequences
