San Francisco is getting ravaged by multiple viruses. Experts aren't sure why. Changing vaccine recommendations could be partly to blame.

do health reporters have a keyboard macro for "changing vaccine recommendations could be partly to blame"? if not, they should!

Iris Long, Scientific Mentor to AIDS Activists, Dies at 92

It’s hard to express how important Iris was to ACT UP’s scientific development. She was the catalyst who started it all. Iris Long, Scientific Mentor to AIDS Activists, Dies at 92 www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/h...

It shocks me how many businesses still don’t seem to get that Trump’s cultural revolution did not actually happen

It's astonishing how wedded people are to the idea that refusing to name what's happening is how we overcome it.

Meta threw a party for a right-wing influencer who wants to “save the West” The celebration offers a cocktail-fueled look at the tech behemoth's rightward pivot.

"The decorations included an archway that read 'Seeking Truth to Save The West,' underneath the words 'Presented by Meta' and the company’s logo." www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Pains me to say this but Twitter did a decent job with their export package. Which I guess is an html front end on top of a database file? Search works reasonably well. Too bad most images aren’t there and browsing isn’t super elegant but search is the most important part.

It's hard to articulate the level of anger & rage I have about watching this happen. I first saw weev doxx people I love *TWENTY* years ago. I spoke to founders of multiple social networks about the risk of these people over 15 years ago. I wrote about it all a dozen+ years ago. They let it happen.

A whole lot of people just fled a social media platform for some very good and very urgent reasons. On the way out, many downloaded an archive of their posts for personal reference, then deleted them from the platform.
That exodus led directly to this platform's increased user base and prominence.

I remain deeply apprehensive about a social media platform that doesn't make it easy for users to 1) download a user-friendly archive of their own content and 2) mass-delete their own content.

This app being powered by three robot rodents running in opposite directions on a hamster wheel seems like a good time to re-up my belief that Bluesky should make good on its years-old promise to add a user-friendly mechanism for downloading an archive of our posts.

I’ll be damned if I’m going to change my bad writing just because some bad readers can’t tell the difference between artisanal bad writing and algorithmic bad writing. I was bad at this first; let the robots change.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth gave a sermon (❗) at the Pentagon (‼️) where he quoted a fake Bible verse (⁉️) from Pulp Fiction (‼️). In his sermon, SECDEF embodied a hitman (‼️) who works for a crime lord (‼️) who murders his business partner (‼️) as an analogy for Donald Trump's war with Iran (⁉️).
