Having observed a psychiatric emergency department for my upcoming book, this season’s portrayal of burnout, moral injury, and workplace violence felt spot on. Systemic dysfunction overwhelms and undersupports the medical workers we expect to be superhuman.

I’m interested in how “system” language obscures the actual nature of mental healthcare.
The “mental health system” implies coherence. What exists instead is a set of institutions that rarely share the same definition of the problem.
I’m a sociologist studying how mental health care breaks down when knowledge is uncertain and institutions don’t align.
My new book, A Mad Mess (University of Chicago Press, Dec), looks at why the mental health “system” isn’t a system at all.
What happens when you cut funding for essential mentla health programs. I studied a local Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team here in ABQ for my upcoming book and the tough work they do is essential to keeping people alive.
One top of the Medicaid cuts, this is devastating. I've been studying these kinds of services - community homelessness and mental illness progams - for years. They've always been underfunded and perpetually in crisis mode, but the Trump admin is an existential threat to an already broken "system."
On a profound level, I don’t understand this country
My final optimistic prediction. Kamala wins. Blue wall is close but not razor thin margins. She also wins one of either NC or GA plus NV, which is razor close, remains unknown for a few days, but ultimately doesn’t matter. I say we know by late Wednesday morning.
So all options are reasonably in play. In that case I think we can all just ignore the micro polling shifts over the next 6 days
The irony is that his decision lost the loyalty of folks who DID trust the Post. So he just added 200,000 folks (at minimum) to the problem he’s cynically appealing to now.
Nice work, Jeff. Maybe time to get out of the media game.
“complemented”
Yes. It’s not my preference as I find hybrid meetings hard to navigate but it does give folks added flexibility
He still owes the city 200k from his last rally here in 2019.
Like keep the kids as far away from him as possible weird. Hell, keep the dog as far away from him weird
I know the weird thing has largely passed, but these people are fucking weird. Like let’s never associate with that dude weird. Like let’s leave as soon as this guy shows his face weird
Two poles fighting for the soul of the country for a quarter century with razor thin margins and massive stakes

That’s alright guys. I tweaked my knee anyways. Better to not push it
To add: these are things you can never anticipate or predict. Indeed as a faculty in the know, I’ve seen searches evolve in ways I would never have imagined
I’m resolving to ignore them. The daily fluctuations don’t change the underlying reality - it’s either really close or the polls are really off. In either case, no need to poll watch. If something huge shifts or happens I’ll hear about it anyways.

This 1000x. I don’t think most people can wrap their heads around how much a billion dollar is. It is always dangerous for anyone to have that many resources
At this point it’s who wins the ground game
