Metal Ludlow typecasting machine 'stick' with lettering molds inserted, pictured in front of a job case with additional letter molds.

Ludlow typesetting: pictured is a 'stick' filled with letter molds making up one line of a poem. This is inserted into a machine that fills the mold with a molten lead/tin mixture which cools into a slug which is then used to print. Meditative, very close reading, and the type is beautiful.

LeRoy C. Merritt Humanitarian Fund The LeRoy C. Merritt Humanitarian Fund was established in 1970 as a special trust in memory of Dr. LeRoy C. Merritt. It is devoted to the support, maintenance, medical care, and welfare of librarians ...

With all the ramped up fear around DEI dissolution, seems like a good time to remind #librarians & #LibraryWorkers about the @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social Merritt Fund. If you face joblessness due to discrimination, the Merritt fund is here to help financially. #library

Two of my grandfather's bookmarks from what (I'm told) was his favorite bookshop in NYC.

The Decline of the Working Musician You used to be able to make a living playing in a band. A new book, “Band People,” charts how that changed.

Strange to reflect on my own participation in this cultural/commercial moment in music. I've spent most of my working life as a side-musician/engineer, and have had many conversations lately with colleagues about the difficulty of making ends meet these days.

good piece - my heart hurts for good young bands trying to imagine a way to make a living in the arts - but I think the core problem is beyond our reach: people don’t have the discretionary income to take chances on music whether it’s shows or purchases. federal minimum wage raise imo but good luck

Favorite thing to happen so far on bluesky: uncanny book recommendation from @jerthorp.bsky.social who recommended José Saramago's "All the Names" based on my favorite bird: Grey Catbird. The prose is very catbird-like and the book is wonderful!

Book cover. Text says: "Goats, H.E. Jeffrey, Pet and Fancy Series 8" Pictured in the lower two thirds of the cover is a goat, standing on green grass, with a blue sky in the background. There are two bright orange vertical color bars framing the picture. The picture has a bold black border. This book cover has to be from the 70s, also probably British (I just checked: yes and yes). The goat is wearing a ribbon around it's neck. It must be the GOAT goat, or the greatest goat of all time: the GGOAT.

Agreed re academic use of "right"! Another academic one that sometimes gets me is history in present-tense as a default. Sometimes compelling, but often gets confusing.

Interested to see where this takes you and who you find that's working on this! Another one I've noticed is "right?" assuming agreement on background context/factual-information in setting up a persuasive argument or take.
