"There is a clear need for a renewed, principled feminist peace movement. This movement must go beyond strategies to ensure women’s inclusion in all efforts along the peace and security continuum." How can art, creativity, and care foster healing after war? In a new @secdialogue.bsky.social special issue curated by Korbel Prof @marieberry.bsky.social and Milli Lake, they and other scholars explore how creative processes can disrupt violence and its legacies.
Notes from the field entitled "Writing Brave Women: An Exercise in Academic Publishing as Feminist Solidarity" by Julia Zulver & Kiran Stallone. Introduction beings: "What does it mean to be a brave woman? In 2020, we saw Belarusian women take to the streets dressed in white to oppose the violent dictatorship that had been in power for twenty-six years. In 2021, our television screens showed the Fall of Kabul, and the takeover by Taliban fighters, who overnight began to reverse decades of women’s empowerment. In response, and despite the risks, women demonstrators took to the streets in Kabul to demand their rights to work, education, and political participation. And in late 2022, we saw Iranian women fight for freedom, cutting their hair and burning their headscarves as they called for women’s rights in the context of brutal repression. "

After war, expanding women's rights is vital but focusing only on gender can obscure other forms of marginalization and even reproduce grievances tied to violence. Read more from Korbel's @marieberry.bsky.social & @sindujaraja.bsky.social with Milli Lake & Soraya Zarook in @gsqjournal.bsky.social
Our new article from the WRAW project is out in @gsqjournal.bsky.social!! We examine women’s rights reforms in the aftermath of war and how inclusive politics shape possibilities for gender justice, democracy, and peace ✌️
NEW: The UN reports that there are thousands of trucks carrying crucial goods like baby food at Gaza’s border, just miles away from the thousands of babies Israel is starving.
Yesterday, Israel allowed in just five.
@sharonzhang.bsky.social in @truthout.org:
“The part of this that is so astoundingly stupid is that the Trump administration has confused our attention to marginalized communities as a political agenda when it is actually a core part of building a robust and prosperous and secure future for the United States”
From the NYT: Not Just More Babies: These Republicans Want More Parents at Home As the Trump administration shrinks federal child care programs, Republicans are backing policies they hope will allow more parents to scale back at work.
They want more MOMS at home. And not just because they hate women.
Their *economic* model depends on unpaid labor. And the most effective way to coerce unpaid labor is to create a second class of people and teach them that they're only "naturally" suited for labor they're forced to do for free.
We can't imagine a better way to spend the day than coming together with a shared vision of security, peace, and equitable futures.

It was wonderful to be with @repilhan.bsky.social, @ramirez.house.gov, and the Feminist Peace Initiative on Capitol Hill yesterday talking about the impact of war on our families and the urgent need to reject the idea that safety comes from dominance.
We really need to be talking about the impact of these cuts and freezes not just on research but on people’s material ability to live— I don’t know if most get how precarious so many in academic are financially
Looks like almost everyone studying gender has their NSF funding revoked today.
It will be critical in the coming months and years to support junior scholars impacted by politically-motivated cuts to science funding. One potential pathway for philanthropic funders (after the lawsuits are resolved) is to prioritize funding cancelled NSF postdoctoral fellowships & CAREER grants.
Oof same here. What outrageous times. Sending solidarity!
FLASH: Following flood of lawsuits and more than 50 restraining orders issued by judges, Trump administration reverses cancellation of thousands of visa registrations for foreign students in US, often due to trivial brushes with the law. w/@kyledcheney www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

Here is my best guidance for action, rendered beautifully by the great John Lithgow. I first published these lessons more than eight years ago, in late 2016. They open the twenty chapters of "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century."

SCOOP: The Trump admin appears to be going into a visa database to quietly change students' immigration status. It's coming entirely by surprise — setting students up to be detained without warning.
It's Mahmoud Khalil & Rumeysa Ozturk — on a wider scale.
Now new, but v.alarming. During the first Trump administration, this report from @marieberry.bsky.social and @cullenhendrix.bsky.social shows that State Dept Human Rights Reports cut back reporting on women’s rights + sexual and gender-based discrimination. 1/
