“Japan, a country with no gas, oil or coal reserves of its own collected almost $40 billion over the last five years while the Australian PRRT provided only $7 billion to Australians.” - Dr Richard Denniss, co-CEO, The Australia Institute

This is a great vid. Great historical background to Australia's trade deals with Japan.
Here's the abstract:
Japan raises more tax revenue from Australian gas exports than Australia does.
Japan has a tax on gas and coal imports that raises more money than Aus PRRT.
Great new research out today @australiainstitute.org.au @richarddenniss.bsky.social

You're hearing it more and more... it's time to tax gas exports!
More than 50 community organisations, including ACOSS and Oxfam, are calling for a 25% export tax.
Australians are fed up with the gas industry not paying its fair share.

Australia Institute research shows the theft of legally owned guns is the cause behind the high number of illegal firearms.
More than 2000 guns are stolen every year in Australia. That’s one every four hours.

Good.
Every week the federal government delays a 25% gas export tax costs the Australian public around $350 million in revenue.
That's $350 million a week that could have gone to funding essential services!
@davidpocock.bsky.social #auspol
It's time for the government to give Australians a fair return for their resources.
A 25% tax on gas exports could raise enough to completely cover the cost of FREE university and TAFE!
@sophiescamps.bsky.social #auspol
A 25% tax on gas exports would raise enough revenue to make childcare FREE for Australian families!
"It's time to get that money, that $17 billion in revenue every single year, flowing back into the pockets of households across this country."
@stephhodgins-may.bsky.social #auspol
Australians are missing out on millions of dollars every week the government delays a 25% tax on gas exports!
"$350 million of revenue a week is what could ease the cost of living crisis."

Cracking piece, Alice!
Just 1 example of the kind of thing unis are getting for their massive spend on consultants. ANU spent $6k on a "non-significant meeting" with a reputation management firm at which apparently no one took a note. That's more than a tutor gets for a semester's work

That was fun.
Told them their decade long party was over and I was there to turn off the music.

So sad!
"In Australia, we subsidise the fossil fuel industry. We give more than half of the gas we export away for free, and we charge our kids a fortune to go to uni."

A gas export tax won't come as a surprise to Australia's trading partners or investors.
But it will drive down domestic gas prices & ensure that Australians get a fairer return for our resources.

A 25% gas export tax would drive down prices for Australians & collect billions that can be used to provide better, cheaper public services.

. @rodcampbell.bsky.social idly wondering if the fact the Japanese govt part own gas giant INPEX has anything to do with the Japanese ambassador warning against a 25% gas export tax....surely not!!! #PointLive
