The LP really has nothing whatsoever to say except "SNP bad". They deserve to be annihilated.

They're not eating anyone's dinner. They're just getting on with being better governed than the US. They've made good choices about electrification and renewables, because they aren't under the thumb of the oil industry.

This is good, at the margin. But it seems like yesterday's war. Today's war is about platform capitalism, data theft by social media, relentless advertising for things we don't want, and generative AI. So replace Meta, Google or anthropic.

Yes, but.. is Office really an important target now? If we worked to replace facebook or whatsapp, or the generative AI, or Google, that would be really something.

Well, Miliband is self-evidently right. He is also in a position to actually do something long term useful. There is a case for "never let a good crisis go to waste" - we can actually turn around the UK's energy system and weaken the power of the oil companies.

You mean one genocide, an illegal war and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank is OK?

We don't need a massive increase in defence spending. We need a radical rethink of defence. We don't need to be Robin to a US batman. We don't need global physical scope. We need European partners and new technology. Ukraine shows the way. Drones (underwater?) and software.

Rachel Reeves warns other budgets may be cut to lift defence spending Chancellor says she is ‘working through a range of options’ to boost the armed forces but does not want to put up taxes

A strange mixture of reality and lack of imagination. The issue is to figure out what defence really is. Does defence require aircraft carriers? Bases in the Indian ocean? American nuclear warheads? I say no. Undersea drones and software? Perhaps. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

What opt-outs would you want? They are usually counter-productive.

Yes, it's extraordinary that people are worried about rebrexit in 2045 or whatever. I am worried about whether there are functioning societies in Britain and Europe, life expectancy, and human rights.

The Guardian view on defence spending: should the UK’s security rest with Donald Trump? | Editorial Editorial: A former Nato chief demands more cash while fixing Britain’s global role. Before billions are spent, ministers must define the purpose of its military

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... thought the Guardian's piece was unexpectedly relevant. Defence is a rather small part of defence spending. It seems obvious that they should start by ditching all the history, and perhaps the giant vulnerable weapons platforms. Ukraine says drones and software.

Lenin used the term repeatedly.

I think this is the way to go. The problem is keeping up with the technology. I don't mind Libre office, but this is not where the real threats are. US platforms steal our data and threaten our public life. We need social platforms not obsessed with advertising. And the AI bubble will burst.

Maybe right. Presidential pardon clearly needs to be restricted. Nonetheless, I want them all in jail.

I'd agree about China and (just about) Iran.

In current circumstances, given the current strength of left forces, I think Lenin would have described your position as "infantile ultra-leftism"

Also, protecting your house price is a pretty grubby motivation. Stepping back a bit, most people would be much better off if house prices halved.

That's true. You can deal with some of the issues by doing a proper job of involving local people, but of course there are circumstances in which government should insist. I feel like that about the current opposition to wind and batteries in the Highlands.

Lenin famously said that the proletariat should support the bourgeoisie "like a rope supports a hanging man". It's much the same with Xi and Putin. There's plenty of scope for detente with China.

I have been part of the UK left since the 70s, and I have been a Trotskyist. I do not regret this. Nonetheless, the record of the left formations is awful. Yourparty is the latest of a long line of factional disasters. The Green parties have already achieved more than we did by focusing on real work

The proposed data centres have aggregate electricity demand about 3x total current scottish consumption. This is renewable power we desperately need for transport and home heating. I see very little in it for Scotland.

The fact the Labour Party, Tories and Reform all have specific policies to make it harder to come here and be a social care worker is absolutely disgraceful when this country is going through a social care crisis. #bbcdn

This is very like the Renault Twizzy. I think they are great little vehicles. There is a problem about luggage, though. I think I would want enough storage to go to the shops.

I hope Tisza can live up to the weight of expectations, but it is a pleasure to see the back of Orban. I managed a research team in Budapest for many years, and Hungary is a beautiful country with a unique history and culture. Bravo!

Congratulations to Ross Greer for his performance in the leaders debate. Answered questions concretely, said clearly what we want, took no nonsense from Offord and Finlay, and avoided the silly shouting match.
