ASA is taking action on Earth Day, and working hard every day to support the protection of the Applegate. We hope that while you celebrate Earth Day, you will also make a commitment to taking action in any way you can. The threats to our region are mounting and there is no time like now to act!
While the country is celebrating Earth Day, Applegate Siskiyou Alliance is demonstrating our commitment to the environment of the Applegate Valley by filing a Motion for Preliminary Injunction for the BLM’s SOS logging project.

We visited timber sale units that had been logged to see the devastating ecological impacts of the logging; we visited unlogged units slated for logging to see the forests before they were logged, and we visited an old-growth madrone tree growing just outside one of the timber sale units.

As BLM continues its lawless logging agenda in the Applegate and beyond, ASA will continue pushing back. In fact, we recently filed suit with our partners at Crag Law Center to stop the SOS Project, the Apple Saws Timber Sale, the Holcomb Hollow Timber Sale, and the Thom Bone Timber Sale.
Apple Saws Timber Sale March Field Report
This short video documenting the impact of the Apple Saws Timber Sale on Ben Johnson Mountain above Ruch focuses on the logging of madrone and other hardwoods, as well as soil damage, and unauthorized new road construction in the Apple Saws Timber Sale area.
Logging is impacting hardwood trees on Ben Johnson Mtn, especially madrone trees, which are being cut and hauled away on log trucks by the thousands. This old madrone shows the potential for madrone size on Ben Johnson, and there were likely more madrones like this one before industrial logging.
Yesterday ASA led a field trip to see the BLM's Apple Saws Timber Sale on Ben Johnson Mountain above Ruch. In addition to seeing the ecological impacts of the logging, we visited a majestic, old-growth madrone tree growing on the edge of a logging units. This tree is likely hundreds of years old!
The BLM intends to quadruple timber production in Western Oregon from the already too high 250 million board feet per year, to approximately 1 billion board feet annually."
The goal is to dramatically increase timber production on 2.4 million acres of BLM lands, “to provide a sustained yield of timber production consistent with the maximum productive capacity of the lands.
The Trump Administration’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has set their sights on Western Oregon forests and has started the process to revise the BLM’s 2016 Resource Management Plan (RMP).

We can't let this happen!
These old-growth forests play priceless roles in supporting the climate, healthy streams, and wildlife.

Current levels are around 250 million board ft per year. This will quadruple the amount of logging on BLM lands, and could nearly wipe out the forests on BLM land in the Applegate River Watershed. The last time the BLM logged one billion board feet of timber per year in western Oregon was the 1960s.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) wants to revise their resource management plan to allow for increasing logging levels to one billion board feet per year on western Oregon BLM lands. Read long-time environmental advocate, Andy Kerr's assessment of the situation: www.andykerr.net/public-lands...
