I don’t feel like much of an artist lately. I’m making the work I need to make but so little of it feels like ART
At least it's good for that
AI slop pretending to be a medical illustration of cranial nerves, but it's actually veins(?) on a guy's face and they're all labeled in gibberish. very educational!!
another day, another horrifying genAI medical illustration found in the wild 🤮
the olfactory nerve, famously in the forehead
A product image of my original collage "Space Age" on the face of a clock.
A product image of my houseplant illustrations on a pullover sweatshirt.
A product image of my egg person illustration on the cover of a spiral notebook.
I've been uploading a ton of new/old work to Redbubble, if you ever wanted one of my doodles, collages, or discontinued designs on a range of products. Kind of obsessed with these three items in particular (I actually bought the clock for myself).

A silhouette of a capybara from PhyloPic is shown on a mobile. The same image is shown on a paper next to it. The text on the post reads: “New blog post. Using images and illustrations from the web responsibly”.
Ever been confused about what images you can use from the internet to illustrate your research? Read our latest blog post to find out about copyright licences, image use, and why you should avoid generative AI for scientific illustrations. 🧪 #SciComm

Embarrassing that certain medical illustrators are still championing genAI in the year of our lord 2026
Analog collage titled "Calcified" featuring imagery of birds' eggs, teeth, and other white elements
Analog collage titled "Effigy" featuring an anatomical drawing of bird anatomy and floral elements

Nice surprise to see an image from my former professor in the book I’m reading

Somebody anonymously sent books from my wishlist, thank you whoever you are!
One thing about me is that I’ll always fill out a post-event survey
Yesss knowing how to assemble shitty geometry in order to understand shapes in space is very much my jam
Still true
I've been cold-emailing and applying to more opportunities lately instead of passively waiting for work to come to me, and I can't say I'm super confident that all or any of them will pan out but something feels really good about practicing the skill of writing about myself and my work.
My housekeeper is doing a terrible job lately
(it’s me, I’m my housekeeper)
$1B per day is about $42 million per hour. About 30 min worth of that spending can fund my lab for my ENTIRE career (~20 3-year NSFs or ~10 5-year R01s). Please wrap your head around that.
AI-generated artwork is officially not eligible for copyright protection after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the appeal.
The court ruled that a work must have a human creator in order to qualify for copyright.

I actually started this one a couple years ago but I didn't get too far beyond the rough sketch. I'm happy to finally have this one checked off my to-do list.

A mini zine with rounded corners, on it is the text “not ducks” and an illustration of a common loon, which looks a little like a black and white spotty duck but with a pointier beak.
A page of the zine with a greyscale illustration of a yellow billed loon hunting minnows. Again the loon is a bit duck-like, but I promise you it’s not a duck! On the page is the text: some think loons are named after their clumsiness on land, but they are incredibly agile underwater, chasing down and catching fish
The back cover of the zine, which has a very large head of a common loon and the text: common loons are the state bird of Minnesota, currently occupied by ICE as such, they’ve become somewhat of an unofficial symbol of the resistance. To that, I say FUCK ICE and all occupying forces. Donate to keep MN housed @ standwithminnesota.com
Another zine!
This time about one of my favourite groups of not ducks. And an u likely symbol of resistance against oppression.

There will be prints of this eventually, by the way :)

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads: The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same... - Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist
Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.
Thank you!

FYI, this grant program is open to anyone communicating science.
It does not require that you went to school for science.
You could be a Ph.D. student, an artist, a community organizer, a teacher, or any other profession. As long as you are communicating science IRL in the US, you're eligible.

generative AI has become widely available in the summer of 2022 and entered mainstream in 2023
people are working themselves up in a frenzy, convinced they're utterly helpless without software younger than still-fresh canned tuna. we have been making art for at least 50,000 years, get a grip
