remembering a girl from high school who used to draw foxes all the time. she told me she was a fox from a distant fox planet, in a tone that suggested she was half joking. i hope she found her way home like i did.

with these actions, joann is signaling that she disagrees with barthes' essay. she doesn't believe she can be separated from the art, she believes that SHE IS the canon. if there's any moral argument from a "death of the author" angle, it's that joann sees your engagement as an endorsement of her.
but a "death of the author" essay arguing about the ethics of engaging with her franchise would get you flunked out of your lit course.
the frustrating thing is joann is a really interesting subject for death of the author! not because she's a transphobic ghoul, but because she's constantly trying to establish herself as the authoritative voice of her work from OUTSIDE the text ("dumbledor is gay", "wizards shit in hallways", etc)
barthes' essay was about literary interpretation. his philosophy was that the text itself was the authoritative source of meaning. it says nothing at all about ethics.
the final word is that if you choose not to consider your own impact, you can't be shocked when others do it for you. you can't cast a vaguely leftist toned meme like a spell to absolve yourself of someone else's judgment.
"separate the art from the artist", "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism", et al. aren't moral philosophies, they're thought-terminating cliches.
where does this "separate the art from the artist" platitude even come from? the one everyone is always using as an axiom about ethical consumption?
if you say roland barthes' "death of the author" then i'll know you haven't read it. that is NOT what that essay was about.
i opened the ad and the economy is literally mentioned in the copy lol
my friends: "where do we want to go for dinner?"
