And speaking of TV Guide, there was its glorious cousin, Soap Opera Digest. My sisters and I would wear our copies out during the summer when we were out of school and watching the whole gosh darn ABC daytime slate.

"Amphibious pitcher makes debut" is a headline from 2015 involving Pat Venditte of the Oakland As. (who really did use both/either arms to pitch, situationally, during his MLB career) The word that some headline writers couldn't come up with was "ambidextrous."

I can't not bring Pat Venditte into this conversation! This still makes me chortle every time I see the word "ambidextrous."

Someone out there is surely already writing a dissertation titled something like "My Cottage: A Comparison of Aspirational Male Domesticity in Bridgerton and Heated Rivalry," right?

Did not know that Matt Waldron of the Padres sometimes throws a knuckleball until tonight. #baseball

Kentucky district says electric buses cut transportation costs Fleming County Schools says its electric buses are quieter and cheaper to run, helping the district save money it can redirect to classrooms.

Electric buses cost much less to operate, are quiet, and generate no tailpipe emissions. Fleming County Schools in Kentucky purchased 24 electric buses using funding provided by the Biden administration's Transportation Bill. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨💧🔋 a 🧵 spectrumnews1.com/ky/louisvill...

There have been several closures in the last 10 years or so of pretty high-profile institutions that in an alternate universe, high-school aged me might have gone to. 😔

A close-up, vertical shot shows a male Snowcap hummingbird perched on a mossy branch against a soft green background. The bird has deep burgundy feathers with an iridescent copper sheen and a striking, bright white patch on the top of its head. Its small, dark eye and thin, straight black beak are turned slightly to the left.

Spent a summer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan & I had a pipe dream of retiring there, briefly. But thinking about trying to get to a major hospital during a UP winter in our dotage meant it was only the briefest of pipe dreams.

Most of us know of "bubblegum" as a FLAVOR, but it's actually banana, pineapple, cinnamon, clove & wintergreen esters blended together, first formulated in 1928 by accountant Walter Diemer for his product, "Dubble Bubble."

He also dyed the grey product pink.

Things I Know Far Too Much About (that aren't theater or movies):

1. the order of succession to the British throne (I'm no @royalhistorian.bsky.social but I can recite it down to the next 50 spots or so)
2. cats at the humane society (can't get more 👀)
3. my neighbor's deep love for mowing his lawn

I accidentally bought _whole_ canned tomatoes for the manicotti instead of _crushed_ tomatoes. I'm old enough to remember when there were no immersion blenders & this would've been a consternating problem. I never cook on weekdays so this is feeling kind of amazing. 🍅

Same. We had the additional distraction today of an HVAC tech visiting. Kitty girls were flopping ecstatically on his feet, then running around and chasing each other. They're just happy little beings.

Was not as "productive" during work hours as late capitalist society would like me to be. However I generally know how to go about solving my work problems, such as they are, so trying to focus on pieces of the next little work problem was easier than <waves hands.>

One thing you can do with your end-of-the-world anxiety is to find someone in your community who needs help and help them. You may not be able to do anything about The Big Problems rn, but you can help someone to solve their problem rn.

This is an especially lovely Vionnet gown, ethereally floaty, of pale pink asymmetry. It dates to the late #1920s, on the cusp of change but still recognisably of its era @metmuseum.org #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
