It is the most popular, yes. I myself have been playing for 10 years over multiple power levels and I enjoy each of them.
Problem is, popularity is not a measure of health, nor is it a measure of quality.
We've had the Bracket system for just over a year now. It's definitely not enough to say that it "stuck", but only time will tell how long it will last.
I wish I had the power to change commander, but I don't work at wizards nor am I in the commander panel.
I'm not saying that they are innefectual. A crutch helps a person with a weakened leg walk, but it definitely doesn't fix the leg.
