Meeting Jim Whittaker ten years ago at the MRA conference in Port Angeles was cool...but better was a room of SAR volunteers hearing his stories of early Rainier climbing and rescues, speaking off script for probably twice as long as he was scheduled.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Whittaker. Jim was one of the great Washingtonians. He inspired many generations of mountaineers to explore the outdoors, including me. I'm grateful for the time I spent with him over the years.

My thoughts are with his family in this difficult time.
