For all these reasons, we hope that our modest work contributes to understanding a territory poised to become a key player in the challenges of the years ahead, whose socio-cultural study around realities such as slavery remains an ongoing task today...

Platforms such as IRA Mauritanie, historically led by Biram Dah Abeid, have worked for years to challenge a situation especially harsh for Mauritanian women, as highlighted by abolitionist Mariem Cheikh, whom we had the opportunity to interview.
Subjected to harsh prison sentences, political persecution, and Human Rights violations, activists criticize the West’s role in the region, calling for ‘stopping the financing of dictators’ as a measure to address the migration crisis linked to the prevalence of slavery.
Turned into a European strategic priority, the curbing of migration flows ties into the perpetuation of slavery in Mauritania, where Spanish financial aid is being used to build ‘migrant detention centers’ to curb the deadly Canary route.

Alongside the historical roots of this issue, the voices focus on the colonial legacy and on current policies by institutions like the IMF, World Bank, and EU —which, through countries like Spain, today finance the perpetuation of these realities via multi-million government aid.
This research highlights the abolitionist struggle against contemporary slavery in Mauritania, amplifying the voices of activists descended from enslaved people, based on interviews conducted over the past two years and a historical-socio-cultural analysis of the colonial legacy.
