Deathling, the chaotic spawn of the Worldbreaker, is now available in Hearthstone! He's the sixth pet in the game, continuing my rigging work for Superseed Studios in collaboration with the team at Blizzard
Milhouse from the Simpsons leaning forward with gritted teeth and frowning, with the caption "We're through the looking glass here, people"
After working on it behind-the-scenes for more than a year, my overhauled rigging codebase is finally ready for use in productions. I still have a few remaining things to port over, but the majority of the heavy lifting is done. It feels crazy to finally be in this position...
CHILL. Mixtape is out May 7.

The animators did such a good job turning him into a little scamp
I rigged and skinned the base and worldbreaker variations, with shadowflame and mech-ling utilizing texture swaps of the initial model. While he's capable on all fours, Deathling's wing modules got put to good use. He's the first pet to stay flying through his animation cycles on the game board

It's from Hoppers or something right?
Ah thank you! It's from this TV spot if you'd like to see the whole thing in action vimeo.com/1182523912

Memes are being made with the Dragonling rig and I think I'm too old to understand them
They replaced the head of Arnie's stunt double but not the older man stunt double for Edward Furlong?
Honestly a standard kind of day when you live in Australia

Four dragon like creatures sit next to each other in a volcanic environment. They show the differences in variations between the character, one grey, one purple, on mechanical, and one demonic
A little preview of the four variations as well
A LinkedIn notification showing a job alert that includes Twine, the topic of the previous conversation
GOD DAMN IT
Definitely no duplicate hierarchies in the rig with the same names? Selecting those joints doesn't come up with names with "|" in them in the script editor? My thinking its it's assigning weights to joints elsewhere in the rig, but not 100% sure it assigns via name strings
You know what would be great? An "I don't want to see any more job recommendations from this useless company" button on LinkedIn. It would be perfect for Twine
It seems like when NG is getting loaded, the NG weights are being assigned to incorrect joints for some reason. Do the joints all have unique names? No accidental duplicate names or something along those lines?
Maybe try deleting the skin cluster node, then re-skin it. Like just quickly bind it with default weights, then try loading NG and see if the same thing happens
Deathling, the next Hearthstone pet that I rigged, drops tomorrow! The animators injected a tonne of personality into this guy, and put the rig through its paces to nail key gags. Spot how the spine scale controls were used in this clip
Have you tried loading NG in the base pose, before setting it to another? Could be some bind pose shenanigans. You could try saving out the NG weights when they are working, and loading that NG file when they are not to see what happens
@animboy90.bsky.social and the animation team putting themselves, as well as the rigs, to work
I had a small interaction with him just the other year, when he paid money for a rig I released for free. I was lucky enough to thank him directly for his generosity, and for his inspiration in my formative years. RIP to a legend
Nate's work on the Halo series was a huge inspiration to me when I was a teen. His face and work in the Bungie vidocs is etched in my mind. Incredibly sad to hear of his passing, his family have a Go Fund Me if you wish to contribute
The main skills of a freelancer: Luck and timing
Man, the freelance rollercoaster can be wild sometimes. One day you're worried about losing a relatively stable long-term gig, the next you have enough work to last several months...
