Trump's federal agents shot Marimar Martinez, a US citizen, multiple times for allegedly menacing them with her car in Chicago. Only hours later, Kristi Noem and DHS started spreading disinformation about the shooting.
Now the official line is crumbling. 1/

Getting in as much seaside zen as possible before the weather turns
A close view of a squid, its eye, and the start of a few tentacles against the white background of the bin it’s in
A large pufferfish (not puffed) in a white bin
A small spider crab sitting on a wooden table with a slipper snail shell and bits of red seaweed
There’s been a lot of science these past two Saturdays
View of the water alongside the boat as we head out to study a few critters and see what we can find in Long Island Sound today
A hand holds a glass jar filled with water and tiny floating specks of plankton
Jar full of plankton!
Evening beach relaxing moment
Another interlude of beach sounds before I go back to doom scrolling
Would have been better without the typo
I have so many other terrible ocean jokes.
Who had 10 gins and was the terror of the West?
Billy the Squid
Why did the shark cross the ocean?
To get to the other tide.
Just the sound of waves in the beach with a bit of a daytime moon video bombing
Don’t give them ideas
BREAKING: Scientists are staging a “science fair” in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.
"The Nazis... imagined their targets would self-deport. Once the myth of self-deportation collapsed, they turned to more punitive measures. On Tuesday, Noem similarly noted the Everglades camp was meant to frighten immigrants into self-deporting. 'If you don’t,' she said, 'you may end up here.'"
"Vaccine and infectious disease experts who reviewed the memos said that Dr. Prasad had failed to weigh the well-documented harmful effects from the coronavirus itself, including long Covid and other post-Covid lung, heart and blood-clotting problems." www.nytimes.com/2025/07/02/h...
Final vote. 50-50. VP breaks the tie.
One single GOP Senator could have stopped this abomination. Saved millions of parents from watching their child go hungry. Saved the lives destroyed when Medicaid disappears.
They will all live forever with the horror of this bill.
The Supreme Court issued a stay, effectively ruling, for now, that the Constitution no longer applies, at least not to immigrants. Fast-track deportations with no opportunity for judicial review violate the fundamental principle of due process, especially for people already on U.S. soil.
This, in a nutshell, is what most stands out to me about the last three years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade: Conservatives desperate to codify a worldview that women actively oppose.
BREAKING: A federal judge ruled all transgender and intersex people can obtain passports that align with their gender identity while the case against President Trump's executive order proceeds.
While this is good news, we will continue fighting until this executive order is blocked permanently.
The study shows that such extreme events are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting and more severe. The steepness of the rise was not foreseen. The researchers say they are amazed and alarmed by the latest figures from Nasa’s Grace satellite. www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

Flier for the talk
Inspired by Vietnam-era activism, Stand Up For Science is hosting a series of teach-ins around the USA this summer, focusing on the importance of science and science funding. I’m doing one May 30th in Silver Spring. Many of you should consider doing one too, and I’m happy to help you plan it 🦑🧪🌎
Spent last Saturday talking astronomy and science with as many people as possible at a festival. Bonus - our next door neighbor booth was the NYCLU
Tomorrow I talk spiders to 4 year olds
“.. the reality is that the Qatari jet can’t ever be upgraded to meet the mandated requirement for Air Force One that it should be able to repel a missile or drone attack. So forget it being anything other than a gift for the president’s retirement.”

No mosses, but salt marsh grasses are okay, too
