UK dry weather 2025: Will there be a drought where I live? We take a look at river, reservoir and groundwater levels after a particularly dry few months.

Will there be a drought where i live? ๐Ÿ’ง โ˜€๏ธ

This week the BBC published an article exploring this question using data provided by BGS, Met Office, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) and Environment Agency.

Visualising climate impacts on UK river flows Introducing streamflow stripes #ShowYourStripes

CANARI scientists from @ukceh.bsky.social have created UK river flow stripes.

High flows are rising in the north/west and drought risk growing in parts of the south/east. Adaptation is needed to reduce impacts from swings between wet/dry.

UK Hydrological Outlook for May-July โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒˆ

River flows likely to be below normal across most of UK, with potential for current low to exceptionally low flows persisting in some catchments.

Flows in western Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to be in normal range.

It was really a great pleasure to collaborate with over 60 people from around the globe to develop this dataset and paper, which we hope will significantly advance accessible global-scale hydrological data.

A huge, huge thank you to everyone that has been involved!

โ˜€๏ธ The dry, warm weather in March and early April in much of the UK led to noticeably dry ground and river flows lower than usual - but recent rainfall has provided some relief.
