The answer to these sorts of questions seems obvious to me, so maybe I'm missing something: the reason these new tools can do this is because /people/ invented the way to solve these problems, and then shared their solutions.

IMO, let's ignore LLMs, and teach philosophy first.

Oh, yes, my model does behave differently according to the noise (internal vs external). It’s just a modified version of W&S so it does mostly the same thing regarding internal/external noise and repulsive/attractive biases.

But how do you think they are showing "mediation"? To me, that's a specific statistical analysis that controls for variance in a particular way. What I see is that reports show some model analysis result of activity in V1 that correlates-ish with behaviour.

In general, my thought that is many of these results would be the same if WM was truly encoded in any area beyond V1, provided the WM area had reciprocal connections to V1, which is probably the case for most brain areas.

This is a cool paper that I hadn't seen - thanks for sharing. I can't see good evidence for your summary. Are you referring to the data presented in Figure 7?

Maybe to help clarify my position: I don't doubt that some WM properties can be decoded from V1. Does V1 causally maintain WM?

It's been years since I read this paper in detail, but isn't the main result that they can decode both the remembered stimulus and a distracting visual stimulus at the same time? Just because there's a WM correlate in V1 doesn't mean that's the causal area for WM.

Yes, that's a great paper, and one of the last few I read before I my thinking moved away from sensory recruitment. However, like many other results, these results are consistent with many alternative hypotheses that'd need be ruled out before we could confirm sensory recruitment.

I have a generative model of visual imagery with neural loops. It recapitulates individual differences in visual imaging abilities, results in differing effects for simple stimuli (Gabor) versus complex stimuli (faces), and can invoke "nonvisual imagery". But I can't be bothered writing it up...

3/6 We inserted replay in various densities in the control resting state - this way we could determine TDLM's sensitivity. To our surprise, more than 80 replay events per minute (A->B transitions), were necessary to find an effect! Far beyond biologically plausible rates (cf. ripple density).
