Which is why this affair is so damaging for Starmer and Labour. People voted for change, not "caring corruption"

It could have been a watershed. A defining moment where a party articulating a clear, progressive agenda and the Will of the People broke the stranglehold of the press barons. A victory despite the inevitable vicious salvos

I also believe the entire strategy to win the last election was "present as small a target as possible"

To continue the analogy, I was going to write "from a distance it looks fine" - but from a distance it really, really does not look fine

You cannot continue like this. At this point, the US is like a house infested with termites. Its still standing, but the joists are rotted through. A stiff breeze and the whole thing will come crashing down.

This all could have been so easily avoided by not allowing Mandelson, who everyone knew was a wrongun for 20+ years, to be put forward in the first place. Starmer, or his advisors, wanted someone rooting in the same sty as Trump. And that decision backfired spectacularly

It sounds like there's wiggle room baked into the system. That's understandable, so as to allow individual judgement. But with the "eyes on" firewalls, again necessary for national security, the Mandelson appointment took the system past breaking point.

RFK will be hoping the vetting procedure for entry into the Master Race is as flexible as Starmer's ambassadorial appointments

We could either do 'corps' or community service. I chose the latter. I used to visit an old geezer that had his leg blown off by a booby trapped tomato plant in the Italian campaign. He was a legend - used to send me to the newsagent to buy his Embassy Regals.

Was your school drafted into the Falklands conflict or something?

Are you being obtuse on purpose?

They appointed a known security risk. Which was, by definition, risky. The risk blew up and spattered Starmer with putrid, Epstein-flavoured mud. Instead of accepting responsibility Starmer is trying to pin the blame on a senior civil servant not even in post when the decision was made.

Oh sure, ive said several times they wanted someone swimming in the same muck as Trump to deal with him. But that pragmatic albeit cynical decision backfired. Thems the breaks. And you don't think briefing American banks against government policy counts as relevant?

We seem to agree the real scandal is the effective waiving of vetting at this level. Although I'd disagree the outrage is performative. What was revealed in the Epstein emails was tantamount to treason, and to suggest snr leadership were unaware of the security risks is BS

Absolutely not. What's lost in all this is that Mandelson's shadyness was an open secret. To suggest Starmer was unaware is preposterous. They wanted someone as mucky and compromised as Trump to deal with his hideously corrupt admin. Theres some logic to that, but it backfired spectacularly
