Two graphs

Two graphs

Several people (Maibritt Henkel, Paul Novosad) on other platforms have complained about Claire Cain Miller's most recent NYT article, especially the figure (top) showing percent change, instead of (bottom) raw change in US births by mothers' age. This is misplaced.

The Girlboss Takeover Has a Data Problem The sub-industries that already employed women just grew faster.

I looked into a gonzo First Things essay that argues women are using the government "prop up" their employment.

It's wrong, but it's wrong in an interesting way. Men actually increased thier employment *within* industry, but female industries grew faster.

Are We Actually Experiencing a Christian Revival? News of a Gen-Z religious resurgence doesn’t tell the full story.

Is there a Christian revival? The short answer is no. Not among Gen Z or anyone else. The long answer is more complicated, and has a lot to do with trends among young women, who aren’t getting as much attention in the press. nymag.com/intelligence...

On Monday we reported on the 8 most insane fascist and antisemitic accounts JD Vance follows on X. @kylebazgo.bsky.social identified the worst of them, HowlingMutant, as Alexander Norden of NYC. He's very edgy, like posting about his sexually attraction to a pile of shoes at the Holocaust Museum.

Hegseth Borrows Violent Prayer from ‘Pulp Fiction’ to Bless Iran War at April Pentagon Worship Service For the second month in a row, Pete Hegseth, who likes to call himself “secretary of war,” read a violent prayer — that echoes a scene in the Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction — during a worship ser...

At Pentagon worship service today, Pete Hegseth again read a violent prayer to bless the Iran war. But this time his prayer was apparently borrowed from 'Pulp Fiction.' I promise I'm not writing for @theonion.com now:

I think he’s a more strategic thinker for sure. I wouldn’t say he’s very good at it, but he makes an effort. And the bar is quite low!

The trouble with betting on the support of Christian evangelicals is that their faith tradition around The Rapture (at least the one requiring Jews in the Holy Land) only really got mainstream in living memory, and there was really no reason to assume it would permanently keep the same shape

The Painter of the Right - Dissent Magazine Thomas Kinkade’s paintings show conservatives a world they have already won.

After you've admired the photo that Trump posted, depicting himself as Jesus, read @sarahjones.bsky.social excellent & entertaining piece on the master of that cartoonish Christo-fascist aesthetic, Thomas Kinkade. dissentmagazine.org/online_artic...
