What about you? What are you hiding exactly?

State intervention in the Commanding Heights of the economy is a tool often wielded by power-hungry autocrats who perceive they are losing their throne.
Trump following in the footsteps of Chavez, Putin, Qaddafi.
Great piece by @bencasselman.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/02/22/b...
Like I said, DM or email me. Unless you want to keep hiding behind an anonymous profile and spew nonsense
Ah I didn’t realize you’ve analyzed smart pig data from 120 miles of line 501, not to mention the miles of undersea pipe. Would love to know your “1st hand knowledge”. DM me - and while you’re at it, email the Fire Marshall too, they’d love to talk with you.
Oh cool, I didn’t realize you had better info than…
the State Parks Department,
the Lands Commission,
the Coastal Commission,
the County Planning Commission,
the District Attorney, and
the Attorney General
But sure, I guess I’ll take your word for it, Nick the Lounge Fella 🔮
On CBS Los Angeles talking about Sable Offshore, alongside Alex Katz from EDC, on how ramping up offshore oil in California will have NO effect on gas prices.
At best, it will add to 0.05% global production.
At worst, we’ll have yet another spill from this corroded pipeline.
Glad to be on CBS News/KPIX @kpixtv.bsky.social last night to talk about gas prices and the short-sightedness of a “tax holiday” on gasoline.
Better instead to spend our efforts creating durable solutions to protect consumers from 📉📈 prices (like EVs! And transit!)

While Venezuela has recently made headlines for its oil reserves, it’s also uniquely positioned to generate renewable energy - enough to meet 10x its electricity needs. @paashamahdavi.com explains how offshore wind can help power a greener future. www.loe.org/shows/segmen...
Twitter post showing Newsom press team circling the $1/gallon price difference between branded gas stations and unbranded stations in West LA
Lastly, we have to tackle the discrepancies between branded (Chevron) vs unbranded (Costco) gasoline. Nowhere is this as high as in CA. Even @govpressoffice.gov.ca.gov's team is on it 😉
We also have to root out hidden prices, or what @severinborenstein.bsky.social calls the Mystery Gasoline Surcharge: the $0.41/gallon “extra” pocketed by refineries without explanation.

How to break the cartel?? Increase competition!
Increase imports by modernizing port + pipeline capacity and force in-state refineries to compete w/ the rest of the market.
And this helps to fix much of state's infrastructure that's aging and leaking:

Table from DPMO Annual Report showing gasoline refining capacity, with 4 companies carrying ~90% of capacity
So what about increasing supply? Well, that only works when markets are competitive.
In CA, markets are effectively an oligopoly: as @calenergy.bsky.social ’s DPMO has shown, just 4 co’s own 90% of refining capacity!

But it will take time to ramp down demand, and the curve is going to be even more jagged going forward.
Truly, we are in the @gruberte.bsky.social @shastingssimon.bsky.social Mid-Transition.
We’ve actually been doing a good job of this in California, cutting annual gas consumption by 13% since 2019.

Picture of the same street with ~60 cars vs 1 bus
Or as former UCSB Phd Ariana Salas Castillo (now @climate.columbia.edu) used to say, 1 bus = 60 cars!
Long-term, we need ↘️ gas demand: think EVs, transit + urban planning. @profmichaelross.bsky.social , @cesarbmartinez.bsky.social, and I make this case in our @thejop.bsky.social from ’22, suggesting demand reduction as a better tool than gas subsidy reform:
