okay so one of the best parts of this season of #severance is all the nonverbal micro expression stuff that *is off the charts* good. there’s a scene between helly and irv in the last episode where she does this thing that’s CRAZY SUBTLE and britt lower had to be talented as shit to pull it off.

Not that of this makes it okay. Just watching people (often men) ruin their, and others, lives over a sporting event instead of having friends/therapy/self-actualization is incredibly sad.

Thus ritualized aggression functions as social bonding. Rioting after sports events could also be seen as a form of group bonding, where destruction is a socially accepted outlet for emotions. It’s like a modern-day version of war celebrations, but instead of battle victories, it’s about a game.

Since many men aren’t socialized to express emotions in healthy ways, they lack the tools to process big feelings like disappointment, euphoria, or frustration. Instead of engaging in self-reflection or community bonding, these emotions explode outward in destruction. aka dysregulated emotions

This leads to parasocial relationships with teams – bc their social world is often limited, some men invest heavily in sports, treating them similar to surrogate families or communities. Teams’ success/failure becomes deeply personal, even though they have no real relationship with the athletes.

The social isolation issue – many men struggle with deep, meaningful friendships due to societal norms that discourage emotional vulnerability. This leads them to seek connection in other ways, like intense sports fandom. (different than playing the sport together)

There’s a lot to be said about the aftermath of the #superbowl, but one angle that I see when I watch footage is how this destructive behavior is another symptom of the male loneliness problem. Here’s why ⬇️
