Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised by the military blowing money on something shiny but useless.

I suspect it’s actually just good old machine learning with updated branding. But none of the stories I’ve read on AI provide clarity or even hints at what it is.

This is probably not your fault because I’m sure the military isn’t saying how it used Claude. But I wish I knew in cases like this what “Claude” even is. Is it a name slapped on a diverse set of machine learning tools? If not an LLM, what *specific* algorithms are used by the military?

In 2024, Anthropic partnered with Palantir, one of Silicon Valley’s most hawkish defense contractors, pushing its A.I. model, Claude, directly into the military ecosystem. Anthropic became the only A.I. contractor used in the Pentagon’s most classified settings. Last year, the Pentagon awarded the company a further two-hundred-million-dollar contract. In January, the U.S. military launched a midnight raid that captured the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro. According to the Wall Street Journal, Claude was used in the classified operation.
