I recall my student writing being far more verbose and formal - mimicking what I was reading in analytical philosophy. I cringe upon reflection. I retained a bit of formality, but strive to strike a more casual tone. I'm far more aware of when my verbosity threatens clarity.

At a certain point, typically later in the semester, I ask my students to take some time over the weekend to express their gratitude to someone at the university that has helped them - excluding me, of course.
So much labor at the university goes unacknowledged. Knowing you are appreciated matters.
