Global Old Vine Registry Surpasses 10,000 Vineyards A press release announcing that the Old Vine Registry has reached the milestone of 10,000 vineyards registered.

Today I'm celebrating a pretty big milestone -- we've now registered 10,000 vineyards in the non-profit, crowdsourced Old Vine Registry. We hit our audacious goal 15 months earlier than we'd hoped to.

Napa Merlot's Identity Crisis My monthly tasting column for Jancis Robinson's subscribers takes a look at the current state of Napa Merlot, with 68 examples tasted.

Last week's column for @jancisrobinson subscribers looked at Napa Merlot's identity crisis. It can't quite decide whether it wants to be just like Cabernet but a little cheaper, a fundamentally more approachable red wine, or something else entirely.

The world (or someone in Germany) decided that today, March 13th, is Riesling's birthday (apparently the 1st mention in recorded history). How old is Riesling? 591 years young. That's a lot of candles. Definitely worth celebrating one of the world's greatest wine grapes. Cheers!

California grocery store wine scheme: Executives at top distributor charged with bribery A federal grand jury indicted five executives of the nation's largest alcohol distributor, Southern Glazer's, for allegedly bribing a California grocery store buyer.

Innocent until proven guilty, and the old saw about being able to indict a ham sandwich notwithstanding.... this is pretty big for the wine world, and seems to anecdotally jive with what industry insiders have been saying for years...

Oh! So sad to hear that author Dan Simmons passed away last week from a stroke at the age of 77. Hyperion is one of the greatest Science Fiction novels ever written, in my not-so-humble opinion. His talent will be missed. RIP.

So I didn't keep perfect track, but it looks to me from my notes that the Premiere Napa Valley Auction #pnv2026 raised about $2.7 million today, with an average per-case price of about $2250. That's significantly down (18.5%) from $3.3 million in 2025.
