I just got a Japanese copy of the first volume today for fun I should read it all again…

The original scene rendered by a computer. It's very grainy due to the probabilistic sampling of light rays, but it clearly shows a phone with chrome trim, casting a shadow onto the wall and reflection the familiar racetrack shaped halo onto the shadowed area higher on the wall. The horizontal portion of the halo is much brighter.

At this point, I went to bed, and the following day @porglezomp.bsky.social made some amazing simulations. Look at this! I'm so excited to see this phenomenon accurately simulated!
