My grandmother had a few of those. She was a member/subscriber of a political-cultural organization (Davidsfonds) that published a book monthly or so and I guess they didn't read all of them ;-) I assume that they were cheaper to produce?

I know I say this nearly every year, but with the amount of time precarious academics are *wasting* on job-hunting, interview prep, logistics around moving to new jobs, learning new institutional systems, etc etc., SO much actual work could be getting done. It's such a waste of time and expertise!

I would like to chime in in favor of luxuriously long and delicious footnotes. Spill your tea, give me your academic drama, tell me why you intentionally left so-an-so out, tell why we should look more at such-and-such. Take up an entire page with a footnote.

down with endnotes renormalize footnotes. huge footnotes. not those ones that are just reading lists, that's what a bibliography is for, I mean discourse-packed messy source digression half the page eighteenth-century footnotes

Ok...so, I am not on substack and I like @profgabriele.com but I think this response to @alexchurchill.bsky.social is unfair.

These platforms are big structures that folks trying to make a living sometimes have to work with; "well you should just go starve for my principles" is not a valid answer.
