I gave a simul yesterday and threatened this checkmate at some point... The kid noticed and didn't allow it! ๐Ÿ˜„

Just finished listening to an episode of the Chess Experience podcast with @highgroundchess.bsky.social. It's a great one, can totally recommend ๐Ÿ‘

That's a good point btw! To find a defense it's important to stay calm

Good try! But I think they can trade rooks and then play g3, planning to meet ...Ne2+ with Kg2 to save the bishop.

I feel like #chesspunks over here are less into solving puzzles than over there. But let's still try!

Can you find a winning idea for Black here? ๐Ÿคจ

This f5 looks crazy against the Scholar's mate. But it's good!

That's a good level! Glad my work helps strong players too.

With the Kan, you'll be able to meet 3.c4 with 3...e6 as well. It'll give some variety.

Happy to hear that! Yes, 3.d4 gives us exactly what we want, so no wonder it's going well. Do you play it as the main opening?

Hi! Most of the time, strong opponents respond with 3.c3. But I don't think it's a good idea to struggle for equality in the O'Kelly. Usually, you want to play for a win if you're playing this opening. So even if I didn't equalize but still have an interesting play, it's good.

So they either don't know it's not so good for Black, or accept the risks and take the fun road.

I don't know what others think but I remember the From used to be presented as the refutation of 1.f4 in old books and sources. So people may go for it trying to punish White's first move. Black gets an active play and hopes to attack instead of playing the Dutch down a tempo.

Good point! Yes, so I thought dxc6 was the preferred option in most of the lines to keep the pawn structure healthier and open central files and diagonals for the pieces

1 year ago 1 0 0 0

Thanks for the reply! So do you think bxc6 is overall a better recapture but unfortunately usually doesn't work? I'm struggling to come up with examples where Black takes bxc6 in the Ruy Lopez to be honest

1 year ago 1 0 2 0

@nickvisel.bsky.social wow, such a thorough response! I thought you'd just say that the key strategy is to castle and go for c3+d4 to conquer the center ๐Ÿ˜… or mention the maneuver of the knight from b1 to d2-f1-g3, aiming at f5 to develop an attack.

Thanks for the big contribution ๐Ÿ‘

Oh, interesting. I guess in the Scotch, if we take dxc6, it usually allows Qxd8 Kxd8 (so we end up in an unpleasant endgame with the king in the middle). In the lines, with no Qxd8, Black can take dxc6 as well if they want to.
In the position below, both captures are good.
