The problem with Twilight is it’s a conservative story when really it should be a story about how repression breeds unhealthy fixations. It’s a work that comes to the opposite conclusion of what it needs to be. But it is a genius story form

I’m working on my own version of Twilight and you know what nobody tells you? It’s actually a really great story form. A love story where the hero is afraid they might be the biggest threat to their love interest is actually great dramatic tension.

I mourn that we will never get a biopic that exposes how Jackson manipulated the media and played them like a harp. How he was a shameless asshole who was abusive to so many people. And those are things in biographies his fans LOVE!

Don’t forget that Michael legally can’t cover the 1993 molestation lawsuit. That was in the settlement.

I love that MST3K/Rifftrax has been there from when I was a traumatized bullying victim to when I’m a father of two. And it hasn’t suddenly stopped being funny. Like those are the reasons I love Twilight!

The live shows Rifftrax has done of episodes of MST3K (Hobgoblins, Time Chasers, Giant Spider Invasion) feel like the true movie version of the show. The same 3 guys getting to refine and reriff movies they clearly loved.

When we watched Mitchell it was the hardest we had ever laughed. We thought it was the funniest thing we had ever seen. And it somehow isn’t in my top 3 for the show. (Hobgoblins, Merlin’s Shop of Wonders, Tine Chasers)

I hate that I didn’t cover what in 1996 I really think of when I think of that year. My mom rented my brother and I an episode of MST3K that fall. She thought we would like it. It was Cave People. And it changed our lives forever. We rented every episode at the store.

In a sense, takes like that are just the culture snob version of the grift that created the opposite ends because they pander to what people already believe without having to address the uncomfortable subjects that are actually the reasons things are how they are.

Like the real cause of this stuff being popular is a comfort for dealing with lives that were brutal. Escapism rose and yes we regressed politically. But not dealing with the way multiple generations were denied the lives we were promised and blaming Marvel ignores the real cause

The thing about how juvenile popular media has produced an era of political regression is it literally sits RIGHT ON the truth. It just misses that the former rose in popularity starting in the mid 2000s when the world started to deny adults adulthood milestones like careers and home ownership.
