But I repeat that any institution willing to lead by investing positively at this moment of crisis cd basically buy up faculty on the cheap, stockpile geniuses, & create a legendary humanistic institution that would be positioned in a shifting market to survive these assaults for a very long time.

When Trump imposed tariffs, Sam explained

- why Klear Vu couldn't just immediately move its supply chain out of China

- the difficulty his small company had with raising prices to Walmart, Kohl's and other customers, and with passing cost increases along to its Chinese suppliers

This is state censorship.

Trump Administration to Begin Refunding $166 Billion in Tariffs

Today the Trump administration finally begins returning more than $166 billion (plus interest) collected from the tariffs the President imposed starting last year.

The Supreme Court struck down those tariffs two months ago.

It's the WSJ, not like one would expect them to understand economics.

America’s Allure Fades in China, Keeping Talent Away U.S. immigration hurdles and fear of crime, amplified by state media, have more of China’s best and brightest deciding to stay home.

American higher education is still the envy of the world, but we have given the Chinese government a big opening for them to keep or bring back more of their top talent. This would take decades (barring major unrest in China) to reverse. Gift link.

What was astonishing (as a non-expert) was to see behind the veil and basically find a few guys vibe reading a major decision (over email no less) that fundamentally reshaped energy and climate policy in ways that impacted every American. I’m conservative regarding institutions, but bring it down.

So, legislation from the bench is bad, unless you're the conservative majority. Did I get that right?

A Football School Striving to Be More Keeps Dropping the Ball

I know that reporters often don't get to choose the headline, but this one is brutal. Ohio State is one of America's largest universities and a research and social mobility powerhouse. And yes, while they play sports, that's not their main contribution.

Do any of the other major competing models have a similar "constitution" / ethical framework as explicitly specified as Claude?

One of our local dairies has grapenut* icecream. It's an acquired taste.

*not sure the global grapenut reach, but it is neither grapey nor nutty - but one of the most boring and wholesome breakfast cereals in the US, first introduced in 1897. Looks and probably tastes like hamster food.

Inside Higher Ed’s Model Is Changing. Our Journalism Is Not. IHE’s new subscription plan will support the independent and robust journalism the higher education sector depends on and deserves.

I have read Inside Higher Ed every weekday morning for most of the last two decades, so I will be closely watching how the inevitable move from free access to paid subscriptions works out. Will colleges add an IHE subscription to their existing Chronicle one?

5 days ago 4 1 1 0

I think they'll likely have to more meaningfully differentiate themselves from the Chronicle while remaining appealing to the people making the subscription decisions. IHE has some great reporters, and I've always considered them "scrappier" than the Chronicle - wonder if they'll lean into that?

That is terrible. This reminds me of Becky Blank and Northwestern. Horrible news.

I’ve got a paper in review that argues one of the biggest changes to US higher education will come from changes to the immigration regime …

I'm struggling to think of even a believable quasi-experimental design for causal effects in social media use.

6 days ago 1 0 0 0

Nope. I am, however, struggling to think of an ethical and scientifically sound experiment that could answer questions like this. Is there something like a Gödel incompleteness theorem for empirical social science?

Pretty good, I would guess. There's probably a listserv or Signal channel of high-brow MAGA Catholic rationalization.

I am 100 percent sure Vance thinks he is an expert in just war theory.

Of course, but there is a huge difference between disagreeing with the Pope on policy and chastising him that he needs to be careful when "opin[ing] on matters of theology."

Someone described him the other day as having "intense high school debater vibes" and I almost died.
