I'm not a fan of podcasts - preferring to read a transcription at my own pace. Which may be a slow read or a quick skim.

But I always listen to IfG's output, which is really good and stuffed with information that I don't know and really should.

Every day since 2016 the Daily Express has discovered, with accompanying outrage, that leaving the European Union meant leaving the European Union.

The financial costs should surely be fairly easy to deal with if it weren't for the politics and, perhaps, concern about moral hazard?

But the opportunity costs of that misallocation cannot be undone.

Would probably need to provide insurance cover too - if things get really treacherous then commercial insurance of hull and cargo probably won't be available.

My only contribution to the UK food discourse is that if you want to understand Britain you should be aware that we invented a condiment featuring a delicate, tangy, sweetly sharp blend of tomatoes, molasses, dates, apples, tamarind, allspice, vinegar and raisins and gave it the name โ€œbrown sauceโ€

I think FTAlphaville articles have been posted on ft.com for some time now - I don't know whether there's also a mirror FTAlphaville address or if older articles have been migrated.

That is, of course, a voluntary scheme - I assume that applicants would receive some advice on the pros and cons given their specific circumstances.

Pleased to report that @robert19pearson.bsky.social has signed up - he'll be remembered by other exiles as an ex-pro and now commentator on finance, especially banking in general and the money markets. Same username as on X.

Say hallo!

The last sentence seems important. If we assume that the insurance industry has lots of capacity now (given the possibility of "quasi-defeasing" the liabilities), that possibility could dry up pretty quickly, and the exit window shut again.

Is the UK government bad at diplomacy or does it just reject it when it interferes with its other objectives?

Which might, of course, be worse....
