NEW: Mayor Brandon Johnson nominated Anjanette Young, a social worker who was handcuffed while naked during a botched 2019 Chicago Police Department raid, on Thursday to serve on the city’s police oversight board. @wttw.bsky.social
“In the first trial, the court failed to give proper weight to the racial realities of not just this case, but the world in which we live,” says attorney Scott Rauscher. “We’re pleased the Appellate Court has given us another opportunity to seek justice for Mr. Augustus through a new trial.” 5/5
The judge in that earlier trial had also thrown out several charges (including civil conspiracy), and all the police defendants except Halley himself. The Appellate Court's ruling reinstates those conspiracy charges and reinstates the suit against three additional CPD officers. 4/5
A jury sided with police in the 2023 trial, but now the appeals court has ruled that the trial was compromised by several factors, including the City's discriminatory dismissal of two Black potential jurors through peremptory strikes. 3/5
A probationary officer, Dillan Halley, shot and killed Augustus after Halley, his training officer, and several other CPD officers stopped Augustus on foot near the 71st Street barbershop where he worked. Halley's claims that Augustus had drawn a gun were later disproved by bodycam footage. 2/5
In a rare reversal, the Appellate Court has ordered a new trial in the civil lawsuit over CPD's killing of Harith "Snoop" Augustus in 2018. The family of the beloved South Shore barber will get another chance at justice. Read the release here. 1/5
Georgia Dept. of Corrections has settled a lawsuit filed by the family of David Henegar, who was beaten to death over five hours while guards did nothing to help. “If any one of a number of prison officials had simply done their jobs [...] he would still be alive today,” says attorney Megan Pierce.

Body cam videos of a Border Patrol chase in Chicago last fall appear to contradict the initial DHS narrative of agents executing a PIT maneuver—a nudging at high speed to disable a fleeing driver.
Instead, feds blew a tire and crashed after a supervisor told them to stop the pursuit:
“This name derives from our city’s legacy of standing up for justice, dignity, and the rights of all people, no matter where they come from. I want to take this moment to reiterate that Chicago does not want ICE on our streets, in our airports, nor in our city.” @wttw.bsky.social

Verdict in for the bellwether case in the thousands of claims against social media companies for making harmful products. Jury ruled in favor of the now 20-year-old plaintiff, who claimed anxiety and depression caused by addictive design, and awarded her $3 million.

When our clients Vicki Guster-Hines and Domenica Neal were executives at McDonald's, their concerns about racial discrimination were dismissed as coming from "angry Black women." But this September, they'll get to tell their stories to a federal jury.

We are proud to have partnered with our colleagues at @newenglandinnocence.org to bring about a day Mr. Rosa has literally been waiting decades to see.
"This exoneration doesn’t erase the past, but it restores truth, dignity, and hope for the future,” Mr. Rosa and his wife, Virginia, stated.
This is the sort of case the False Claims Act exists to facilitate, & it’s really cool to see a distinguished civil rights firm take an “out of area” case to remedy massive military-industrial corruption.
In a victory more than 13 years in the making, four brave whistleblowers exposed a military contractor's fraud against the US Army during the War in Afghanistan. Jury awarded $15 million in damages, which the False Claims Act triples to $45 million.
A group of community members are petitioning a court to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate and potentially prosecute wrongdoing by immigration agents during the Trump administration’s “Operation Midway Blitz,” accusing Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke of failing to act.
Today a broad coalition submitted a petition, calling for a special prosecutor to investigate and prosecute alleged crimes committed by DHS agents during Operation Midway Blitz.

The press conference will be held on Thursday 3/12 at noon in Federal Plaza. All members of the media are encouraged to attend to hear about the petition and ask questions of the signatories. We hope to see you there.

In honor of her being booted, here is Kristi Noem is telling feds to "hammer" protesters for "the way that they're talking, who they're affiliated with, who they're funded with, and what they're talking about." It's not that easy to get so much contempt for the First Amendment into a single speech.
"In Kristi Noem's time fleecing the American people with her derelict of leadership at DHS, Chicago has withstood targeted attacks by DHS and the federal agents under its purview who have incited chaos in our communities with their violence and callous disregard for our residents' most basic human rights. Instead of seeking collaboration, Noem weaponized fear to undermine trust between communities and local law enforcement who work every day to keep our communities safe. Her tenure will be remembered by her brazen corruption, the reckless exploitation of vulnerable families to advance a far-right agenda, and willingness to put the President's interests over those of the American people. She will not be missed in Chicago."
Mayor Brandon Johnson on Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem "She will not be missed in Chicago."
Full statement:
Secretary Noem's legacy is one of racial profiling, abuse by ICE and CBP, free speech violations, and more.
While she is leaving DHS, the anti-immigrant policies devised by White House aide Stephen Miller aren't. Congress must remain firm and deny funding to DHS until they truly rein in ICE.
