This little essay on spirit photography and commodity secularism ("The Ghost and the Gimmick") was a lot of fun to write; I hope some of you will find it fun to read. And even if not, I'd love to know what you think. Gift link: read.dukeupress.edu/american-lit...

Remember those glorious days after January 6th when the MSM was briefly unafraid to call him on his bullshit? And then they scuttled right back up his butt when it became clear he wasn't going to jail.

Yes, to hold a press conference at a US military base. He was too afraid to go anywhere else. They're talking tough, though. Russia envy. I wonder what will happen.

And yes, the MSM makes me sick, just printing his bullshit like it's a press release. This article should include three legal experts explaining why there are NO legal methods other than violent overthrow, and a couple of Dems condemning Ogles for wasting Congress's time with unconstitutional BS.

I don't think he's joking but I do think he's trolling, trying to snatch back headlines to distract from their many fuckups this week.

The Biden administration announced last Tuesday that they were totally fine with Israel's ongoing violation of basic humanitarian conditions in Gaza, and plan to continue feeding the genocide machine. Call your congresspeople and tell them to support the Joint Resolutions of Disapproval!

Oof. Well, all our lame-duck president did was host a bipartisan morning-after panel at the tiresome Eagleton Institute celebrating how great it is that we still have peaceful elections.

That's interesting, in light of the emergency interfaith prayer service they held the day after the 2016 election--which spoke volumes, albeit indirectly (sort of like Jesuit queerness). Nothing like that this time?

Joint Statement by the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters
April 19, 2024
The American Association of University Professors has defined two central pillars of higher education in America: academic freedom and shared governance: the freedom to teach and do research without interference from entities external to the profession; and the "inescapable interdependence among governing board, administration, faculty, students." In the last three days, Columbia University President Shafik and her administration have seriously violated both.
We are shocked at her failure to mount any defense of the free inquiry central to the educational mission of a university in a democratic society and at her willingness to appease legislators seeking to interfere in university affairs. She has demonstrated flagrant disregard of shared governance in her acceptance of partisan charges that anti-war demonstrators are violent and antisemitic and in her unilateral and wild

A stunning statement from the American Association of University Professors, Barnard and Columbia Chapters.

“We have lost confidence in our president and administration, and we pledge to fight to reclaim our university.”
