On filing the corners off my MacBooks

Inspiring solution to the “Ive Memorial Knife Edge.”

(this is one reason I would go back to Thinkpad in a heartbeat if the battery life/performance ratio improves)

Someone is going to try a lawsuit over the “to any PERSON” clause of the MIT license pretty soon, if it hasn’t happened yet.

It is always wild when Claude gives project timeline estimates in person-weeks (often fairly reasonable).

And then you just go do the thing in a few hours of prompting.

Have to wonder if it’s just my user profile, or if this pattern is intentional.

Possibly unwise: my real user has full access to sandbox user directory, so I can just cd over and run privileged commands (eg git push).

This setup has been very smooth. Only disadvantage is my agents stop running when I close the laptop!

I have a separate user account (macOS).
- ssh access (persists through sleep so never lose session)
- authorized key, localhost only (no password)
- some read-only PATs configured in that user account
- experimenting with nix so I can blow it away and start over easily!

There’s so much alpha available to Google Docs and Drive if they made folder organization and a couple other things less terrible. How is the UX so badly broken after all these years.

core.excludesFile could be configured by a tool (ideally with user assent, of course)

Can’t comment on the drink, but the food at Mex in Kendall is good, if you haven’t been.

Suburban North burbs, Mexico Lindo is also good - packed on weekends now. (there’s also a newish counter-serve place not far off Rt 1 S, Cilantro’s, which is surprisingly good)

I ended up doing this and it’s basically fine. ssh key, restrict access to only localhost; tmux, vscode devenv.

The main reason for a separate manifest is indexing performance (they don’t do range reads on data pkg). But the same approach could apply, if you compress all files individually in one container, record the offsets in a manifest, and then put the manifest at the end of a zip after the data file.

Take a look at the conda package format v2. It stores a data archive and manifest archive stored separately inside a zip container. The zip CDR is at the end of the file (iirc) and can usually be fully read with a single get. This identifies the manifest offset for a range read.

Funny side effect of LLMs: now every language gets to experience the Lisp curse!

That cartoon fellow bears a striking resemblance to a bald John Bolton. It’s the mustache that does it.

He’s not at Kristol levels of awareness yet, that I know of, but give it some time?!

We’re at “AI companies (plural) no one‘s ever heard of taking out superbowl ads” phase of the hype cycle.

My general impression is there are about 30 separate 30-under-30 lists published by that org. But 900-under-30 doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

- Julia‘s binarybuilder. Interesting b/c only ecosystem I’m aware of which said ”we will only cross compile (and we will fix all upstream libraries that fail to support that)”. Requires some activation energy, but it’s really nice to have a consistent, fully containerized build env.

Nice post! Most discussions of just-use-if/poetry miss this. Two systems you might want to look at:
- pixi.sh is outstanding, from the creators of mamba. “uv for conda ecosystem” is one way to describe it. Extremely fast, has lock files and venvs, just works.

I post politically on eXtwitter and no science/tech, and here only post on science/tech. But we must not look away from what is happening right now, out in the open with no regard for morality or human life. Do not look away.

Is anyone running Claude under a separate (macOS) local user?

I’ve been experimenting with it, but always a bit uneasy running under my real account. Their sandbox tech looks solid, but I would prefer a stronger boundary. ssh into a separate user would have some advantages over VM approach.

Arguably the best collaborative editor even with the many flaws 😢 (very interested in alternatives!)

This is admittedly self-Interested, because requiring Python makes it more annoying to include in environment images

(The funniest part of listening to Bloomberg radio is the IBKR prediction market spots which advertise “1 dollar in, 87 cents out -- 13 cents profit!”)

They’ve lost Bloomberg radio — which has been noticeably neutral-positive on Trump until recently.

But guest just called Trump part of “global pedo ring” w/out qualification, said MAGA is split over VZ aggression, and quipped that Santa might not be allowed in American airspace as non-citizen.
