It's 2026 and google translate is still using the wonky statistical engine they bought off the back of a truck ten years ago

How do you reckon? I mean, suppose one of the chess engines *has* discovered new regions of latent chess-space - would we be able to tell which one, just seeing the moves it makes?

“You are an abolitionist, ain’t you?”
“As to that, I cannot so readily answer. If by abolitionist you mean a zealot, I am none; but if you mean a man, who, being a man, feels for all men, slaves included, and by any lawful act, opposed to nobody’s interest, and therefore, rousing nobody’s enmity, would willingly abolish suffering (supposing it, in its degree, to exist) from among mankind, irrespective of color, then am I what you say.”
“Picked and prudent sentiments. You are the moderate man, the invaluable understrapper of the wicked man. You, the moderate man, may be used for wrong, but are useless for right.”

.@nodejs has always been about I/O. Streams, buffers, sockets, files. But there's a gap that has bugged me for years: you can't virtualize the filesystem.

You can't import a module that only exists in memory. You can't bundle assets into a Single Executable without patching half of core.

Developer Relations: what it is, and how to measure it | Seldo.com DevRel isn't community management or a conference circuit — it's docs, engineering, content, and product feedback, in that order. Measure it with pipeline, shipped features, and attention, plus the on...

I've been talking to prospective hires about what developer relations means for me and how to measure it, and when you explain something more than 3 times you should turn it into a blog post, so here you go: seldo.com/posts/develo...

Thinking back to that time at the 2005 Aichi Exposition when I had a brief conversation with a British royal named Andrew something or other. I wonder whatever happened to that guy.

I think that movie also appeared in a Stewart Lee routine? I think his line was: an art film about middle-class people having a disappointing holiday.

Written English has barely changed in 300 years. If you can read Harry Potter, you can read Robinson Crusoe (1719).

Chat, is this real? (But I'm asking the patrons of Chatsubo, the expat bar from Neuromancer, and Wage's joeboys look away with vat-grown eyes full of indifference.)

Back before I left twitter, after they launched interstitial video ads, it used to insert ads before the video of a tweet that was itself an ad. Always made me chuckle to think that Mastercard was paying Twitter to show me an ad for Lexus or whatever.

While this absolutely sucks, we are going to see a lot more places implementing universal global age verification over this next year, because the number of states and countries legally requiring it has gotten to the point no one can keep up anymore.

I've told this story on ContrabandCamp but it's worth sharing for BHM because it's one of the greatest stories ever.

A thread.

I suppose it's tedious for me to argue about whether or not something is weird, but it's worth noting that Poincaré would've found it weird. Here's him talking about Hilbert's program, from 1913. Wonder what he would've thought of today's "logic piano" !

I just got an update about a bug I filed against Chrome in October 2015 😂

Good news: bug closed because it no longer reproduces!
Bad news: bug still reproduces easily

@developer.chrome.com do users need to refile the bug in such cases? Or is commenting on the closed issue enough?

Thank you for your note.

The use of the Hilton name on HiltonICE.com is intentional and expressive. The website is a work of political commentary and parody addressing Hilton's publicly reported cooperation with ICE, presented in the visual language of a hotel brand to critique that decision. No affiliation, sponsorship, or endorsement by Hilton is claimed or implied.

The site does not offer lodging, accept reservations, or engage in commercial activity, and is protected as expressive speech. The purpose is commentary, not confusion.

That said, I appreciate you reaching out and will review your concerns with counsel (a Ouija board and the ghost of the First Amendment).

Dog Bless,

Tobes

Idea: there should be a Firesign Theatre TTRPG.
Like maybe a pbta variant, with surrealism as a resource. The more I think about it the better an idea this is.
