In our second new preprint this week, we share a surprisingly under-discussed risk in camera-based monitoring:

New from #Kineticolor:
Computer Vision Helps Experimentally Monitor Mixing Effects in Deep Eutectic Solvents
Mixing matters, and you have to monitor it over time…and beware of vessel reaction geometry!
🎥🧪 If you can see it, we can help you measure it.

We escaped…again!
It’s always great fun to be out with the #Kineticolor team, celebrating recent papers, projects, presentations, and posters.
We found our way out of a witchcraft room with 15 mins to spare.
Long may this group tradition continue.
Very much looking forward to sharing a part of the #Kineticolor story for the inorganic community tomorrow!
@usic-2025.bsky.social long wait is over. joint Universities of Scotland Inorganic (USiC)/RSC Scots Dalton Conference starts tomorrow at Strathclyde Uni. Plenarys @evaheviagroup.bsky.social Andrew jupp @unibirmingham @clairecarmalt.bsky.social & 21 lectures from early careerists and PhDs. @rsc.org

Today, we bade farewell to the fantastic Hannah Nicklas, following her eye-opening MSc research project.
Once more, the #Kineticolor team is reminded that we are a part of all that we have met.
We look forward to reporting on Hannah’s forensics-focused research story in the near future!
Congratulations to all this week’s Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry graduates, class of 2025!
Their paths through our research team were separated by 4 years. Today, they were just 2 seats apart, united in celebrating their PhD graduation.
None of what we claim as ‘success’ is possible without the likes of Ben and Barry.
Many years later, emerging from COVID, I interviewed a PhD candidate who took a risk to present what became the most creative and memorable interview I’ve ever conducted.
The undergrad was Benjamin Clark and the PhD candidate was Henry Barrington.
👨🎓A surreal and satisfying day at University of Strathclyde graduations 🥳
Back in 2017, before I had any research team, an undergrad came looking for a summer placement. It so happened to be the summer we spent playing with cameras, tinkering with a side project that later became Kineticolor®️.
🧵
✅ Temperature increase (25 - 60°C) reduces mixing times by up to 10-fold
✅ CFD simulations validate experimental observations
✅ Computer vision provides quantitative, non-contact monitoring
✅ Synthesis applications shows that vessel choice is important, even on the small scale, when using DESs.

We in the #Kineticolor are very proud of these two!
At a joint conference for #PhD students across the Universities of Strathclyde + Glasgow, Kristin Donnachie gave a talk and Calum Fyfe shared his poster on some of our most recent adventures in #ComputerVision.
As they grow, we grow with them.
Five hardback copies of #YouAreNotAFraud are en route to USW to give away to attendees…and I can’t wait to hear whose won!
Massive thanks to Llinos Spargo for inviting me back, and to Prof Martin Steggall for his kind hosting during my session.
I was delighted to return (remotely) to U of South Wales for another edition of the Imposter Syndrome Masterclass!
We had a range of Qs to end the session, covering the effect of the (so-called) #ImposterSyndrome on mentoring, management, diversity in leadership, and moving between careers.
Team #Kineticolor out for Barry’s wedding.
Left to right: Calum, Kristin, Barry himself(!), me, and Tim.
We absolutely 100% manage to go the full day without wondering what we might analyse next.
Our new #Kineticolor paper is out in Analytical Science Advances!
“experimental protocols utilising Kineticolor, a computer vision software, were developed to qualitatively and quantitatively study presumptive tests for xylazine detection.”

Thank-you to CMAC for partnering with the Imposter Syndrome Masterclass again in 2025!
What a pleasure to work with the new students in the CEDAR CDT programme.
Here’s trusting the tools from the workshop will help you maximise the enjoyment of your exciting journies ahead!
I’m looking forward to serving as one of the #RSCDigital judges for the forthcoming #RSCPoster 2025 event over on LinkedIn.
Sign up today to take part from 12pm Tues — 12pm Wed!
Good luck, and have fun!!!

🏅 Will your #PhD in #Chemistry end with you having the number "VIII" medal?
We etch in these PhD medals with the belief that each of us is "A part of all that I have met". We are ready to meet YOU!
Our PhD post is open to applications till 16 Feb:

Earlier this week, Kristin (2nd year PhD) and Tim (postdoc) went to the @roysocchem.bsky.social and SCI ‘Demystifying Reaction Kinetics’ symposium, sharing their stories about non-contact reaction monitoring with #Kineticolor.
There’s just one week left for applications on our open PhD position!🧵
