Cardiologist rides train to visit North Bay clinics
I work for the Stanford Medicine Children’s Health network as a pediatric cardiologist. I work with an ultrasound technician. We use the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train to travel to outreach clinics in Novato and Rohnert Park four times per month.

I despise driving (well not driving, but being in traffic) and really enjoy my train ride. We both easily bring along our bicycles on the train to complete our journeys with short, safe bike rides on either end.

On my train ride, I occasionally look over at the freeway and wonder why more of the commuters stuck in traffic on the freeway don’t join us on the train.

I completely support Measure B on the June ballot to extend the tax in support of SMART public transportation.

Great letter to the editor supporting the SMART train.

I too despite sitting in traffic, which is probably a near-universal sentiment!

Let's give more people more alternatives to sitting in traffic.

Love it! Great to see AC Transit leadership doing the best they can to run a tight ship -- but if we want to stop cuts to bus service in the East Bay (and save transit throughout the Bay) we need to pass the @connectbayarea.bsky.social measure! So come help gather signatures luma.com/connectbayar...

The Board provided many ideas to explore, as did callers, and now management can make a proposal.

Much discussion to come, but the direction has been set, I hope.

Thanks to @transbaycoalition.bsky.social members who put out the alert (👀 @carterlavin.bsky.social ) and all those who spoke:

Love seeing Muni and BART with the highest rail ridership growth in the US.

If we pass @connectbayarea.bsky.social measure, ridership growth will continue.

If we don’t, service will be slashed and ridership will plummet - Bay Area way of life and economy will crumble.

We must pass this measure!

Excerpt from the linked letter.

"1. Options should be considered to preserve late-night service in Sonoma County.

The extension of nighttime SMART service under MASCOTS will not fully replace current late-night Golden Gate Transit 101 service in Sonoma County. Northbound, the last SMART train is proposed to leave San Rafael at around 10pm, much earlier than the current last 101 bus, which leaves at 12:25am. The MASCOTS website notes that, for passengers going north after this last SMART train departs, “There are no public transportation options. Passengers would need to use a ride-share service or a private taxi service.” Although late-night ridership is low, preserving late-night service is essential for Sonoma County residents who work late shifts, are returning from entertainment in SF or the East Bay, or experience unexpected delays, and a rideshare, costing $50 or more, would not be an accessible replacement. Before implementing the pilot, planners should consider adding two runs of late night “owl” bus service to major & highway-accessible SMART stations to preserve this safety net."

@seamlessbayareaca.bsky.social, North Bay Transit Riders, and @transbaycoalition.bsky.social sent a letter with feedback on MASCOTS that included this concern, and I understand others raised it as well.

One of the most backwards part of the many years long Clipper 2 delay is that MTC is allocating more funds to continue the operation of Clipper 1.

Cubic should be paying MTC and transit operators significant funds for the rollout debacle, and it’s good to hear MTC is exploring this.

Graph showing growth of Richmond Ferry ridership, with a drop in 2020 and 2021 and steady growth since then

Richmond Ferry's ridership dropped during the pandemic, and since then it's grown every year.

Weekday ridership in 2025 was nearly double the 2019 ridership, and it continues to grow this year.

Increasing service and improving the timing of service has been a big part of growing ridership.

Last week SF Bay Ferry presented to WCCTC about the Richmond Ferry, which is an amazing service that's growing in popularity.

But there's room for improvement! Would love to see them:

1. Charge for parking
2. Coordinate with AC Transit
3. Find more equitable funding

AC Transit reveals doomsday budget scenarios. Entire lines could be cut If a new tax doesn’t pass in November, one plan would cut service to two-thirds of pre-pandemic levels. Bus lines that serve fewer people, such as the 281, 19, 251, and 56, are on the chopping block.

We're at risk of losing a LOT of our AC Transit service. Learn more at

BART supporters need 186K signatures by June. Will Hunky Jesus and $7-a-gallon gas get them there? Last week’s BART column elicited a fair few arguments against a BART rescue measure. They made as much sense as carpeting on a train.

186,000 people is a lot of folks to get ink & paper signatures from. Help save, improve, and expand transit throughout the Bay Area by helping get signatures from your friends, family, and folks around town. Come gather w/ us at: luma.com/connectbayar...

BART: The worst-case scenarios are actually worse than you’ve heard If voters spurn a November revenue measure, the biggest question isn't what stations BART may close. It's if BART will continue to exist, full-stop.

The Bay is at risk of losing BART. Caltrain also faces major cuts -- but there is an army of volunteers working to get the signatures needed to put a transit funding measure on the ballot that'd keep our system going. Learn more

With $200B, we could:
Spend $500M + 2 yrs to fix US rail delivery to match Spain.
At Spain's $35M/mi High Speed Rail cost, less ~$20B for SF transbay and major NEC infra, build 5,000 mi of rail:
Bos-DC: 500 mi
Sacto-SF-LA-SD: 600 mi
Van-PDX: 350 mi
Leaving 3,500 mi for presidential whim

At a precarious moment for Muni, S.F. releases results of annual rider survey Seventy-eight percent of riders surveyed last year said Muni service was excellent or good, according to Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Love to see that Muni is still killing it in customer satisfaction! The only way to keep that going is to ensure there is sufficient new funding to fill the agency's deficit. Come join the kick off for Stronger Muni for All tomorrow, or come gather signatures to help the measure get on the ballot!
