First New College, then Hampshire College. We're coming to the end of the attempt to make higher education something other than hackwork, slavish devotion to job training for working and middle class, pre-wealth studies for the "elite." How fucking dull are these times of ours.

No grades is egalitarian in spirit, but also has practical effects. People often argue that having grades is pragmatic, but in spirit, it is pro-hierarchy. One of the jobs we give higher education, whether we admit to it or not, is to justify inequality and elitism.
(and OMG @mkmayhall.bsky.social I clicked on your profile after reading your comments here. You're a Venezuelanist!?!? Me too! Is there a chance we know each other? If not, we should!)
It really feels like a very beautiful feature of U.S. higher ed is dying, and it makes me so sad.
I went to a SLAC and have been a professor at another for a decade. I still deeply love and believe in the type of education they provide, and had every intention to continue working at the SLAC until I retired. The situation (at every level) at the SLAC became so untenable that this is my last year
An absolute tragedy. This country used to allow weird niche things to flourish and we will all be so much poorer for losing Hampshire. (Fwiw, for me, weird is the ultimate compliment)
Senator, as a Michigander, I want you to publically and boldly raise hell over this! Please raise to this occasion; he's threatening genocide!
As a constituent, I beg you to escalate your opposition to all this. Be bold and creative and express the moral outrage of so many of us Michiganders
It is very easy to become accustomed to Trump’s ravings, and laugh them off. That’s a dangerous thing to do.
When Trump states: “A whole civilization will die tonight,” he is threatening to commit genocide.
We can’t allow that to happen. Congress must end this war NOW.
Zohran Mamdani and Afroman, that’s the whole post

This looks amazing, Matt! If I were spending the week in NY this week, I would have loved to go!
this one trick can cure cultural stagnation: state supported education, arts organizations, healthcare
Yeah, seriously...
Ha! I am in a fellowship right now with one of the authors (Leif Weatherby). Small world!
THANK YOU so much! I am sincerely excited to do the readings! 😀
It’s one of those online games of telephone where everything gets flattened and turned into a caricature of itself. “Some Nazis admired some aspects of Jim Crow” gets turned into “actually European antisemitism is due to the US”
Hi! This makes so much sense to me, but I have no idea how to even begin. Do you have recommendations of what I could be reading or thinking about to better educate myself (and eventually my students)?
Commenting on energy injustice is now the floor for any halftime act.
I am not 100% sure if this is an example of what you're talking about, but the Spotify AI voice cannot pronounce a single Spanish word or name. It's astounding that they haven't figured out something that seems so simple after all these years...
dark times ahead. but we are going to win
The march in Chicago has continued on past Trump Tower and is turning back south into downtown.
The snow is coming down hard now.
As it does, the column chants, "say it once and say it twice, we do not fuck with ICE"

Screenshot of blog post titled 'A Message to Our Community: Library Privacy, Procedures, and Law Enforcement' dated January 29, 2026. The post outlines YDL's commitment to welcoming all community members, explains that the library does not ask for immigration status when registering for library cards, states that library records are confidential under Michigan law and cannot be shared with law enforcement without a court order, and clarifies that YDL does not collaborate with ICE agents unless legally obligated. The post includes links to review YDL policies and mission statement, and references the library board's support of Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners Resolution 26-015 opposing county cooperation with immigration enforcement.
We welcome everyone at the library, and we aim to provide spaces where everyone feels safe, respected, and supported. Following recent immigration enforcement activity in Ypsilanti, we want to make sure our community understands our library policies:
Nothing. Your son is clearly purrfect.
Thank you. I didn't know how deeply my soul needed to know this.
