The sky and water were determined by following the natural grain of the wood and I created a scene using NL (Twillingate mostly) imagery as an inspiration. This is a method I have used often.

I painted a series of 5 pieces about the 1914 "Newfoundland Disaster". The book "Death on the Ice" by Cassie Brown has been taught in NL as part of the curriculum for decades and is a moving account of the tragedy compiled from many sources including first hand accounts from survivors.

This is the second children's book I've illustrated & considering the first was in 2003 this may be my last! The first, "Lucy Grey" was about Newfoundlanders reacting to the Cod Moratorium, and this one is about reacting to the fallout from 9/11.
