I hope the city doesn’t take credit for Mother Nature’s overnight contribution to street cleaning, and a free light show along with it

Washington demanding 'entry fee' from Ottawa before trade talks: sources | CBC News The Trump administration is demanding what amounts to an "entry fee" from Canada to engage in trade talks toward a revised Canada-United States-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA), four sources told R...

Canada has already paid an "entry fee" in these negotiations — dropping counter-tariffs and scrapping the Digital Services Tax, a modest tax on the world's most profitable tech giants, at the behest of Donald Trump.

Those concessions got us nowhere.

Just a reminder when you inevitably hear the Conservatives and their mouthpieces bemoan about this, that this is how they saw their purpose on them:

If I didn’t know any better, I would think that there are very large and very wealthy companies who are more than happy to use the cover of US negotiations for Canada to “make concessions” to improve their profits. Oh wait-

At the end of June, Canada also scrapped the digital services tax, which would have imposed a three per cent levy on the Canadian revenues of digital giants such as Amazon, Apple and Meta.

"The repeal of the digital services tax will significantly advance negotiations on a new economic and security partnership with the United States," Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said at the time.

More than nine months later however, negotiations do not appear to have made any progress.

Also, we should bring back the digital services tax.

For a “Draft & Develop” organization, whether or not someone has an agenda, to be able to quote someone who says “there is none” is already a massive problem. I’d rather then say “it’s not the best, but there’s something”.

Fair comment on both; I suppose I’m coming in as I’ve argued over the years that Jets should be visibly into their player development because it’s the neglected prospects or reclamation projects that are can be better effective complementary pieces vs acquiring Schenn/Appleton/Tanev types.

It’s not whether or not spending the most money is effective, it’s the /perception/ of investing in development - which right now, as quoted earlier, “there is no development in Winnipeg.” Not really enticing for a city and program already having difficulties convincing players to come.

Dismantling Canada Post for parts Canada’s mainstream media’s convergence was on full display today.

"But Canadian media need you to think that this is a disaster. They need you to believe that Canada Post is not viable and therefore, they must make their services even worse, so that they can finally turn a profit again."

Why are Canadian media reporting on Canada Post as if they've all been given a script to follow? Journalists are interfering with the union's contract ratification vote by parroting Canada Post management's talking points and telling Canadians that it isn't viable.

I'm sorry, is ESPN's colour commentator making light of John Hynes constantly yelling in the faces of under-17-year-olds for the USA Hockey NTDP?

Ottawa has been quite excellent at disrupting the plays that cross the middle of the ice, so credit to them on that - but Ehlers has looked magical tonight. Give him another proper winger, please

Ehlers 👀

There’s a small period of time where there was actual growth - mostly spurred by Paul Maurice coming in and going “WTF is going on here” - and then COVID disrupted everything. Meanwhile, everyone else has been guarded by Marcel Comeau leading the amateur scouting (and Giese/US scouts at the time).

Hate to say it, folks - but look deep down and you’ll know it’s true: this team is being run like an AHL operation, not an NHL one.

Whether it's JD Vance telling the Pope not to stick his nose in Theology, or Pierre Poilievre claiming that Mark Carney is bad at Economics, we are truly living through a Golden Age of self-entitled mediocrities whose only move is projecting their own inadequacy upon their critics and opponents.

Power without accountability: The Palantir manifesto The problems with our tech philosopher kings

New, from me: Take the Palantir manifesto seriously, if not literally.
It reveals that our tech philosopher kings want public money, but without public accountability. This creates a dilemma for governments unaligned with its techno-fascist vision. 🧵

“Go out and win a job” - but also, we won’t provide you with resources to develop; you’ll have to play a narrowly defined and buried role in a system; you won’t play with our NHL regulars in preseason to learn how to fit; and you won’t play a lot of NHL minutes unless there’s injury. Good luck!

A quick, casual reminder to everyone that Carney/Canada signed an agreement with Cohere in Aug 2025 "to build out Canada’s commercial capabilities in using and exporting AI" - Cohere has Palantir as one of its partners, and has many of its models already in use by them

Instead, they prioritized the win-now approach where it was more important for players to understand and play a narrow role in a system - and they remain left with more questions than answers as their key players creep further towards the likelihood they will not be “key” for much longer.

Overplaying vets, overcommitting to players that liked to be here, and overdeveloping players with low ceilings has cost them precious time to evaluate and properly develop players that may have been better in meaningfully contributing in a complementary role on cheaper ELCs and contracts.

The thing about the Jets constantly picking the middle route of not-really-rebuilding and not-really-retooling is that if they actually /lived/ that mantra, they might’ve had some success in doing so - or at least a better grasp of what they are lacking.
