Song Sparrows are back, and they seem to be everywhere I go. Song Sparrows are named for their melodious singing. Their song makes them very conspicuous in the audio landscape, but their brown stripes allow them to quickly disappear into the vegetation to escape predators. #wisconsin #nature #birds
Film Friday. In January, I went to High Cliff State Park in WI on a foggy day. I took along a 1950's Voigtlander Vitomatic I with a 50mm f2.8 Color/Skopar lens. I think the old camera did quite well. Shot on Ilford HP5 400 speed. #voigtlander #ilford #blackandwhitephotography
Early in April, we woke up to freezing rain. The garden became coated with ice. I took some photos of the ice on the maple tree, chicken wire, switch grass, and milkweed pods. I figured I would come back out later, but the rain got warm, and melted away the ice. #icestorm #garden #nativeplants
Two male Red-winged Blackbirds engaged in some fighting displays over spilled birdseed. I don't think blows were ever exchanged between these two. Birds are very territorial this time of year. Photo: Supple's Marsh in Fond du Lac, WI. Nikon z50ii 50-250mm #wisconsinbirds #birds #nikon
Possessed Canada Goose! Birds must spend an enormous amount of time preening their feathers if they want to keep them in shape for maximum flight performance. This goose seems to be experiencing something else altogether. #birds #wildlifephotography #nature
Some interesting birds from a trip to Manitowoc on Monday. Horned Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Ross's Goose, and Bufflehead ducks. There were many other cool birds on Lake Michigan, the Harbor, and the Manitowoc Impoundment. #wisconsinbirds #manitowoc #lakemichigan

Last night, the Northern Lights appeared, and almost as fast as they arrived, they faded. I snapped a quick photo with my phone and then set up my "real" camera for a time-lapse, but only captured the fading lights. Oshkosh, WI March 20, 2026 #northernlights #auroraborealis #wisconsin
Monday, I started with an excursion to Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh to greet the sun, and wrapped up with a trip to Rush Lake to say goodnight. It was crazy warm for March, about 70F for a high, and next Monday is a low of 9F. #oshkoshwi #wisconsinnature #birds
A few weeks ago, I was playing troll, under the HWY 41 bridge over Lake Butte des Morts, looking towards Oshkosh. Not much graffiti under the bridge, but it was fairly fun and family-friendly, but I'd prefer it if it wasn't there. #OshkoshWI #winter #sunrisephotography

Snow sticks to a grove of Eastern Cottonwood trees growing along a road through a wetland at Uihlein Waterfowl Production Area, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. From last Saturday's snowfall. Nikon z50ii 18-140mm #snowfall #trees #Winter
A muskrat lodge in a swallow marsh on a late winter morning. The foreground is a bit of a distraction, but for some reason, I like how it pulls my eye, and relflection of the clouds mesmerizes me. Shot with a Linhof Technika V, Fuji 100 Provia F #FilmFriday #fujiprovia100f #linhoftechnika
We had a beautiful snowfall this weekend. I went out just at the end of it to a local creek to get some video. Waukau, WI youtube.com/shorts/dm3Su... #relaxing #snow #winter
It is a remarkable place. I need to go more often than I do.
A few shots from my trip today, at High Cliff State Park. It was fun to walk around the forest, surrounded by fog, deer, and trees. Fog makes it easier to see. By blocking out some of the scene, what is in focus becomes clearer. #highcliffstatepark #winterphotography #wisconsin
At the Lake Michigan beach in winter. I left the house two hours before sunrise, arriving at Point Beach State Forest at dawn. It was worth it, not too cold, right around freezing. I am working on a video of that morning, and hope to have it out next week. #lakemichigan #winter #wisconsinnature
The Shamrock Orbweaver (Araneus trifolium) is an almost comical-looking spider. This one is hanging out in the center of its web, waiting for a meal. The web is located in a restored tall-grass prairie, so it probably won't be long before something comes by. #spider #prairie #wisconsin
I think this sums up the weather today without taking a photo outside. These boots on the porch are my "slip-on" boots for taking the dog out. They have gotten a nice dusting of snow from the crazy winds and the little snow we got overnight. #Snowstorm
It was a frosty morning last Friday, and because temperatures were around zero, the frost held up to the sunlight for a few hours. These photos are all of native prairie grasses, indian grass, wild rye, and big bluestem. Lake District Preserve, Cambridge, Wisconsin #frost
Earlier this week, I wandered out into the cold at sunset on Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh and got some pictures to take home. Still some open water out there in the bay, so there are a few ducks and geese around, as well as bald eagles. #lakewinnebago #oshkoshwi #winter
I was using a Viltrox 15mm f1.7 on a Nikon z50ii. In this case, it is easy to tell because of the changing intensity. It has a tail, like a comet. I can also see about five satellites in the photo, which travel at about the same speed, so they have the same length, 1/10 that of the meteor.
We took a quick trip out into the snow today to look for ducks on the Fox River and Lake Winnebago in Oshkosh, WI. Hooded Merganser, Mallard Duck, and Ring-billed Gull. I saw a few others, but were too far away, and it was too snowy for pictures or proper ID. #ducks #birds #winter #oshkoshwi
The Orion constellation in the November night sky. For me, Orion the Hunter is one of the easiest constellations of stars to find in the night sky. The three stars that make up his belt are bright, even with the fair amount of light pollution in the sky at home. #astrophotography #nightsky #orion
Great Blue Heron in Marsh
The Great-blue Heron is our most common heron. They can be seen silently standing or wading along the shorelines of lakes, rivers and in wetlands. They will pretty much eat anything they can swallow, fish, frogs, crayfish, and small mammals. Horicon NWR, WI. #brids #herons #horicon
Fall colors in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, October 2025. Driving around my old stomping grounds, I had to stop and take a photo that might have been from my childhood. #fallcolors #trees #Waupaca
I broke out the old Canon 35mm slr last month with some fresh film, and fired off a roll. $50 dollars later I got a few good pictures. Lakeshore, Forest County, WI.

Striated Deer Fly (Chrysops striatus) has a lunch date with my arm as I go about my wetland walk. Deer flies and horseflies can be my nemesis. I am not too bothered by mosquitoes, but these bite you and lap up the blood; it is hard not to be bothered by that. #deerflies #flies #wetlands #parasites
