New paper led by my colleague Karis Colyer-Patel using an adapted N-back alcohol flanker task!
Preprint alert! ๐จWe looked at what drives people to drink and how motives for use change across age. We used generalised additive models to model non-linear interactions between age and drinking motives as predictors of alcohol use severity.

This article has now been published in Addictive Behaviors! doi.org/10.1016/j.ad...

We refer to this paradox as the social plasticity model of risk and resilience (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...). We are currently conducting a longitudinal MRI study in adolescents and young adults to further investigate this paradox (nofaresearch.com/en/research-...).
We hypothesise that adolescence is associated with an increased risk of developing substance use disorders. At the same time, we suggest that some of the risk factors commonly linked to adolescent onset of substance use may serve as protective factors later in early adulthood.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure to give a lecture in the clinical psychology master's program at the @essb-erasmusuni010.bsky.social in the addiction course about how addictive behaviours are manifested in the brain and why adolescence is such an interesting period of life to study!
