And like the people detained in other cases we’ve reported on, the people targeted by these detentions were doing things “the right way.”
People on their way to work are being interrogated, detained, and transported to detention centers where they are forced to choose between prolonged detention and “voluntary departure.”
And so far this year, we’ve recorded 15 cases of traffic stops conducted by ICE in the Charlotte area, particularly in the eastern and southern parts of the city. And these figures only include cases that Siembra NC has been able to confirm.
The Siembra NC hotline has documented at least 20 other cases of asylum seekers detained at their check-in appointments this year. In the last 6 months, we have documented at least 18 detentions of people who accidentally entered areas under military jurisdiction.
You can do something about these detentions right now. Join the parents who are helping their kids write cards to Denis and Genesis’s family in Honduras and to our US Senators in Washington D.C. 🔗tr.ee/letterwriting
The deportation of 6-year-old Denis and 11-year-old Genesis and their parents has made many folks aware of one of the most disturbing patterns of ICE activity in our state.
They won't tell her when those appointments will be, so she can't go back to work as a pharmacy tech, and they won't give her driver's license or passport back, so she also can't drive. Our communities can help support Jackeline, Karen, and other families that are experiencing detention.
Jackeline's been released with an ankle monitor and instructed to not leave the house on days when ICE officers will conduct bi-weekly visits. Now Jackeline and her mom need our support.
Jackeline's mom Karen had to fund her daughter's legal defense to bring her home. This administration, which has tried to deny everyone's bond, was forced to release her.
As of Tuesday, April 14, Jackeline has been released from detention. Jackeline was detained at her regularly scheduled check-in appointment three weeks ago. You can donate to their fundraiser here:

💐And you can sign up to accompany families to their next check-in appointment, verify suspected sightings as part of ICE Watch or train local businesses on how to exercise their 4th Amendment rights 🔗 tr.ee/siembrasignup
Everyone in our communities deserves safety and dignit

🍀 You'll find information on how you can join parents helping their kids write cards to our friends in Honduras and to our US Senators in DC. We need transparency for what DHS agencies have been doing in our communities. 🔗 tr.ee/letterwriting
We can take action together and send a strong message to families impacted by detentions and to our elected officials who could be doing more to demand accountability from DHS.

ICE continues to detain people who live and work in our state. And as we saw in the recent deportation of two Durham elementary school students, these detention have targeted people who were "doing things the right way."
They can mandate the agency release reports on who has detained. It would be their first report in the last two years.
We deserve to know when kids in our state are detained and deported.
Call our US Senators and ask them to demand transparency from the Department of Homeland Security.
Sen. Thom Tillis: (919) 856-4630
Sen. Ted Budd: 336-941-4470
And today, elected officials across Durham pledged to accompany any children to their immigration appointments – and you can sign up to join them at bit.ly/siembramncvol
They didn’t have criminal records. They were easy targets.
This is not the end of their journey.

This is who the Trump Administration and their enablers at the North Carolina General Assembly say when they reference “the worst of the worst”. This whole year, the calls to our hotline have been from people who were “doing everything right”.
They were taken away in an SUV, watching through tinted windows as their aunt stood outside the office, not knowing they had been detained. Their aunt could not have expected that in less than 48 hours their family would be in Honduras.
They were going to all of their appointments. And now their teachers, their peers at Burton Elementary, and Durham neighborhood are left missing them tremendously. Genesis, Denis and their parents were abducted without warning at a routine Charlotte immigration check-in on Monday.
And if you've got people in your life who still think things aren't going all that bad, share this video with them!

As one employee told us, "We are supposed to be a safe place. We have to do something more to protect our community so they feel safe getting services here."
Our leaders must stand firmly against these detentions and declare essential service sites off-limits for immigration enforcement.
Mecklenburg County employees who were present at the time of Elmer's detention told us that other parents were so afraid they did not leave the premises for hours afterward.
Families go to places like the WIC office in Charlotte to receive support accessing nutritious food. ICE officers detaining parents where they go to access essential services is unacceptable.
