What would a large society with a gnostic state religion look like

I understand that it's mostly just being used because it's a word that implies a profound moral weight but I also just don't know why the "right" of the state is supposed to be the framework to adjudicate this in. "Rights" are for people, not states!

You could imagine Christianity-less pagan Rome ending up somewhere like Jupiter-as-Sol-Invictus but with lots of minor and local deities surviving in something akin to Saint veneration

Alternatively lots of monotheistic traditions come from one deity of a polytheistic pantheon becoming elevated above the rest, first as a "first among equals" and then as a sole god. This is where Judaism came from, for ex. Underutilized idea

This makes sense because Catholicism, in history, is fundamentally a religion that functions as a source of authority and also symbiotically with secular authority, but there's other ideas that could be fresher. Make your Fire Emblem church kind of Marcionite

Everybody's fantasy church is Christian and therefore kind of Catholic but more of them should draw on the fun early Christian denominations that didn't make the cut
