Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

Kimberley diphtheria rates more than triple in a month after 50-year eradication An outbreak of the long-dormant, highly contagious bacterial infection diphtheria in Western Australia's north is raising alarm among government officials and experts.

“Diphtheria is one of those diseases that had effectively been eradicated in Australia," he said. “In the last 12 months, cases have appeared in the Northern Territory & this year have now spread into the Kimberley so it's somewhat unprecedented & a concern to us."

Greece's pivot to Israel: Spyware, war corridors, and a risky alliance From Predator spyware to arms deals and military corridors, Athens has tied its future to Tel Aviv at the very moment the US-Israeli order is losing ground across West Asia.

A very depressing read on how Greece and Cyprus have become bosom buddies with Israel on arms production, surveillance, military alliances, natural gas, and shipping:

THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ IS COMPLETELY OPEN AND READY FOR BUSINESS AND FULL PASSAGE, BUT THE NAVAL BLOCKADE WILL REMAIN IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT AS IT PERTAINS TO IRAN, ONLY, UNTIL SUCH TIME AS OUR TRANSACTION WITH IRAN IS 100% COMPLETE. THIS PROCESS SHOULD GO VERY QUICKLY IN THAT MOST OF THE POINTS ARE ALREADY NEGOTIATED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! PRESIDENT DONALD J.TRUMP

President Trump referred this morning to "OUR TRANSACTION WITH IRAN." This is, of course, interesting because the last time the United States struck a deal with Iran involving a transaction, Republicans completely lost their minds.

Let's take a trip down memory lane. 🧵

Punishment alone won’t fix youth crime Tougher penalties dominate the politics of youth crime, but without addressing how young people – particularly First Nations children – learn, relate and develop, punishment risks deepening the very problems it seeks to solve.

Tougher penalties are the default response to youth crime.
