Note especially the story on page 1 about a speech by Jean Paton, then 80, in favor of #adoptee birth certificate access that she gave at a rally in 1989. She had been able to see her own birth certificate 46 years earlier, BEFORE Michigan sealed its birth records. "This does not happen any more." ๐ฃ

Since the government reduced access to SNAP benefits, participation has declined.
"When people ask me what policy might actually improve food insecurity and reduce poverty, I say Universal Basic Income. That would solve a lot of problems."

Come for the arthouse theater love, stay for the Amy Goodman trademark puns.
Thank you to all the arthouse theaters around the country who are the absolute lifeblood of our culture & community.
Our indie film about indie media will be in 100+ arthouse theaters in the coming weeks!
Unfortunate about your dad. My *adoptive* parents also divorced.
About half of the ceremony is music, along with stories of loss, some that were recorded from the West Bank because Palestinians were not allowed to travel to the ceremony in person.
It ends with the anti-war version of the traditional Passover song, "Chad Gadya" written by Chava Alberstein. ๐ฟ
They are singing Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" with my favorite lines,
"Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in." ๐ถ
"...that refuses the belief that war, bloodshed, dehumanization and conflict must define our future. Together, we will show that there is another way - and that despite it all, hope is still alive."

Has anyone else seen "The Lost Child," a Hallmark movie from 26 yrs ago? It's based on a true story by an adoptee.๐ฅ
Warnings:
๐ฐ It starts with child trafficking in the 1950s
โ ๏ธ Soon there is a painful loss, an adoptive father from hell, and a truly evil stepmother +

On the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, a tribute to Marek Edelman and his comrades, to the legacy of the now-largely-forgotten-hopefully-to-soon-be-revived-thanks-to @mollycrabapple.bsky.social Bund, and to the tremendous diversity of understandings of what it means to be a Jew.
Thank you, this is fascinating history
Why I like it:
- The adoptee searches through a new thing called the internet
- A fantastic reunion scene by phone
- A storyline of an inherited health condition
- Indigenous people describe the theft of their children
- Most Native characters (but not the main one) are acted by Native actors
