My favourite is “your rate is per word: does that mean you charge the same for short words as for long ones?”

A digital drawing of a kestrel in flight. Its beak is open and its neck, tail and primaries on its left wing (and one secondary) are colorful with ripples resembling shapes found in Polish paper cutting. Its eye is red and white. The drawing is mainly in darker tones.

An intricate symmetrical pattern in Polish folk art style (wycinanka) portraying two songbirds with their wings open, heads up, open beaks, surrounded by leaves and flowers. The pattern is white against a dark background. Behind the pattern, above the birds' heads, there's a magenta and green ribbon symbolizing aurora borealis. Additionally, small sparkling stars surround the piece.

Another #PortfolioDay !

Cześć! I'm Anna, a Polish hobbyist artist experimenting with different styles, digitally and traditionally. I usually draw animals (esp. birds!) and other things inspired by nature. I usually weave bits of Polish folklore and culture into the art as well.

Dzięki za uwagę :)

Traditional mixed media painting showing a forest scene. There's a stream in the middle, with a fallen tree trunk acting as a bridge over it, with Pikachu and Eevee running through it, and Charmander clinging to the trunk behind them. In front of them, Bulbasaur stands on a rock in the stream, with Squirtle splashing around in the water, the two enjoying themselves. Various bug Pokemon can be seen in the distance: Weedle, Kakuna and Caterpie on trees, and two Butterfree flying around.

Traditional fan art in watercolor and colored pencil. It’s an illustration showing the Pokémon Ampharos, with a little Togepi in its arms, standing among bushes full of yellow flowers. A small house, trees and electrical poles can be seen in the background, with Mt. Fuji faintly hovering over them in the distance.

I'm not having a great time recently, but I did get to use one of my favorite words in a translation today and it makes me feel a bit better.

Ah yes, translators, people who are just so expensive that firing one will apparently improve the financial situation of a studio that sold over 5 million copies of their game 💀 The greed of CEOs knows no bounds.

The vacation book haul is still a work in progress but I'm already quite happy with it! (if anybody has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them 👀)

Well I guess that's fine, then. (It's not.)

This #SaturdayVoidRec💫 is nothing less than @alkapibara.bsky.social's 2025 GOTY 🤍

The Seance of Blake Manor is a spooky mystery game set in late 19th century Ireland, featuring fascinating Irish folklore & an investigation you won't forget anytime soon...
A gem by a tiny team like we love them!

Why hasn't anybody told me that angels in @esotericebb.bsky.social speak Polish? This is hilarious and pushes it to the top of my to-play list 😁

A Song on the End of the World

On the day the world ends
A bee circles a clover,
A fisherman mends a glimmering net.
Happy porpoises jump in the sea,
By the rainspout young sparrows are playing
And the snake is gold-skinned as it should always be.

On the day the world ends
Women walk through the fields under their umbrellas,
A drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn,
Vegetable peddlers shout in the street
And a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island,
The voice of a violin lasts in the air
And leads into a starry night.

And those who expected lightning and thunder
Are disappointed.
And those who expected signs and archangels’ trumps
Do not believe it is happening now.
As long as the sun and the moon are above,
As long as the bumblebee visits a rose,
As long as rosy infants are born
No one believes it is happening now.

Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet
Yet is not a prophet, for he’s much too busy,
Repeats while he binds his tomatoes:
There will be no other end of the world,
There will be no other end of the world.

Warsaw, 1944

And yet a lot of people are forced to do it this way, because the system is broken.

When I was getting started in game loc I did it as a side job, because initially it’s hard to make consistent money with it. But once you have regular clients, imho it gets very hard to combine translation with other work without your mental and physical health taking a huge hit (ask me how I know).

For a big chunk of the industry a perfect translator is somebody for whom this is a side job, so they don't insist on a living wage, but who has availability of somebody for whom this is the only job. Somehow they do not see the contradiction here.

I'm really sad to hear that, but I totally get it :( Take care ❤️ (And I hope you'll keep your website up so that there's some way to contact you in the future - but do what is best for you, of course!)

I think @therat.zone's mission statement might be the best thing on the internet, except maybe that one webpage that lets you stare at a pug in a blankie and passively level up your pug-honoring skill

To me the craziest thing about this is that translating dialogue is the fun part of our job! Most translators love it. Now, if somebody invented a tool that magically knows if a single word with no context is a noun or a verb... THAT would be useful.

(it's impossible, but hey, a girl can dream)

😭Is it just me or do all of these translations in the left column sound like something the guy from the Fellow Kids meme would say?

They write such lovely, creative and funny translations! It's genuinely such a joy to read them! It gives me hope to see all those clever jokes and how much fun some of them are having. But why can't they re-read what they wrote before sending it to me?

Every year I tell my students "use spellcheck before submitting the final project", every year they look like me like I'm stupid for suggesting something this obvious, and inevitably every year roughly half of the group submits their final projects WITHOUT using spellcheck.
