“Q: How will this new technology benefit overworked faculty?

A: By allowing Skynet to relieve you of tasks tedious enough to merit paid employment, you can free up time for unremunerated pursuits.”

NYT homepage screen shot with three headlines back to back:

“Job Cuts Driven by A.I. Are Rising on Wall Street”

“A.I. 'Hallucinations' Created Errors in Court Filing, Top Law Firm Says”

“Was Tim Cook Stylish?”
(Also why is that in past tense?)

Do you ever have the kind of day where you think that if you cared even 5% less about the world and the people in it your day would be at least 10% easier?

So miss me with the AI literacy solutions. In fact, keep missing me until you propose “AI literacy” that teaches folks how these systems incorporate systemic oppression into its operations. That’s the kind of literacy we need.

My initial conference hot takes were below. I'll add that if I am going to talk to a room of three people, I'd rather not have spent the time or money to leave my house to do it.

Philosophers (in general) also need a lot more creativity *AND SKILL* at presenting/communicating ideas & scholarship.

This was such a good read not only on the virtual Pacific APA meeting and @apaphilosophy.bsky.social declaring the 2+1 experiment over early, but on the discipline of philosophy more broadly: who gets to be part of it, who *wants* to be a part of it, how we communicate about research, and more.

A mom and widow who had benefits cut because of a mistake on a form. A home health aid making $13/hour who said food pantries are so overwhelmed, they couldn't help. A student who said SNAP access supported eating disorder recovery.

My reporting for @slate.com & @economichardship.bsky.social:

“Everybody’s using AI for everything nowadays, and if you don’t, you’re a misfit outsider who should be stoned to death in the town square, and then resurrected virtually from your data so you can be stoned to death in the virtual town square, for infinity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/04/15/o...

Many people I know on the far left on mass incarceration don’t think there is any “justice involved” in it.

“Listen, I agree with you. If everyone had their basic needs met, it would, in the long run, cost less for the government, hospitals, taxpayers, and insurance companies. Employer-sponsored health insurance is a vestige of a different society that now threatens to collapse…”

In the new FabGab (feminist approaches to bioethics) podcast episode Kayla Mehl and Paul Tubig talk about their paper "Challenging Anti-Fatness in the Climate Crisis."

(this relaxed woman listening on the floor doesn't seem to be too concerned with climate change or anti-fatness, but I am!)

Thought i had started going bald last year as my hair began fairly suddenly falling out, but then when I moved out of an unbearable working environment it stopped and grew back. A reminder of how much control senior management in workplaces can have over the body even in the bourgeois office.

Liam has reminded me of something I've been meaning to do for a while:

Why "Beauvoir" and not "de Beauvoir"?

This seems right. What works better? A specific person who is named and is accountable for the inbox? Doing non-email-based connecting through face to face contact? Even then people seem to want a way to follow up once they connect and usually share an email address.

Important Update from Cincinnati Public Schools

Dear CPS Families and Staff,

We want to share an important update from earlier today.

At a small number of our schools, an out-of-town law enforcement officer visited school offices to conduct wellness checks related to students believed to be enrolled in CPS. The officer claimed to be working on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The officer did not request to see or interact with any students, and there was no direct contact with students.

District leadership contacted the officers and directed that any future inquiries regarding CPS students be handled through our Office of General General Counsel. Counsel. We We have also reinforced the District's protocols for responding to law enforcement with school staff.

Please know: the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We remain committed to maintaining safe, supportive and welcoming school environments for every child and family we serve.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's school directly.

Would strongly encourage all these political leaders pretending they know something about Just War Theory to consider taking my class instead. Ohio State has programs to allow community members in some classes - check it out and look for International Studies 2800: Introduction to Peace Studies!

I wonder how it feels to be so wrong on doctrine that multiple authorities within the Church clarify exactly how and where you’re wrong

Not wonder in an “I’d like to experience that feeling” way though
