🎂 Here’s wishing that the Elizabethan Madrigal Singers of Aberystwyth University have a ball this weekend, as they celebrate their 75th anniversary and give a premiere of this wee birthday commission for them #PenblwyddHapus #BirthdayGift nathanjamesdearden.com/news/by-the-...
🥳 Very excited to be heading into town shortly for National Youth Choir 2025 Showcase at St. John's Waterloo.
Although I have been working with this fab bunch since 2020, this will actually be the first time I will hear my music sung by them post-pandemic: nathanjamesdearden.com/live/everyth...
From the male voice choirs of the Valleys to the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World, music is woven into the fabric of Welsh identity - a ‘Land of Song’ whose voice is being ripped out ✍🏻 Nathan James Dearden wp.me/p8Mk4U-V3y
Released TODAY (7 February 2025), my little arrangements of Erik Satie’s ‘Trois Poemes D'Amour’ are featured on RTF Classical’s new album - Paris 1913: L'offrande lyrique - with muso friends Claire Booth, soprano and pianist Andrew Matthews-Owen.

My heart breaks this week.
I studied for four years at Cardiff University School of Music (BMus Hons., 2013; MMus, 2014), and it was the first place where I was truly able to be myself and pursue what I love.

✊ The Board of Directors of the Welsh Music Guild - of which I am one - have released a statement in response to the proposed closure of Cardiff University School of Music: welshmusicguild.wales/news/
“Rydym yn ailddatgan ein hymrwymiad i ddiogelu a hyrwyddo sefydliadau cerddorol Cymru, eu llwyddiant yn y dyfodol, ac yn galw ar bawb sy’n gwerthfawrogi’r celfyddydau i ymuno â ni i wrthwynebu’r sefyllfa anffodus hon."

"Mae Cymdeithas Cerddoriaeth Cymru yn cefnogi’r rhai sy’n ymgyrchu yn erbyn y cau hwn.”
✍️ As part of the School’s advocacy plan, here is a space created by current PhD student at Cardiff where alumni share comments on how their degree at Cardiff impacted their lives and careers (submissions will be used by the School to show their alumni’s reach/impact): docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
👋 Here is a petition set-up by recent graduates from Cardiff University School of Music: www.change.org/p/save-cardi...
I have heard there will be more coming for people to throw their voices behind the cause.
I fear that senior-unknowns have been sabotaging the School for some years, and it appears that this is what they have been plotting for some time behind closed doors.
👉 For colleagues at Cardiff: What can be done? What is the next step?
This is the university’s only remaining arts faculty, and with one of the richest musical histories and impacts not only for Wales, but across the nation, this would be catastrophic for Wales’ cultural future.
Wales’ cultural heart is continually being torn at, and we are staring down the barrel of Music’s closure after a 90-day consultation.
Utterly devastating. Spoken to colleagues this morning and the writing appears to be on the wall at the School of Music at Cardiff University.
A big thank you to all of you for making 2024 a special music-making year for me 🫶
It has personally been a tricky year, but grateful every day for the lovely musicians and friends who fill my life with joy.

So difficult finding a barber you click with. I think this is especially the case if you’re a gay man. Today I found a good ‘un.

I want all young composers to know that rejection is the norm. I reckon 85% of my ideas never come to fruition because I can’t engage an orchestra, soloist, festival, commissioner, funding body etc. It’s exhausting, but keep going. Don’t give up! It’s their loss, not yours!
