It's been said before but a parliamentary system where no-one's allowed to notice lies is one that rewards lying.

He gave Lee Anderson the chance to retract the same accusation before calmly asking him to leave.

But when it's a young Muslim woman doing the same, he bites her head off and orders her straight out?

"I have a dream..." Washington Post virtually ignored the speech 50 years ago - Living in a Media World Today was the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered what is considered to be one of the great speeches of the 20th century, if not one of the best American...

WaPo journalists —virtually all white—covered the March on Washington.

A former Washington Post managing editor who was an intern at the time, WaPo published a dozen stories about the march — but ignored MLK's speech.

"We blew it" he wrote... IN AN OP-ED.

In my experience, especially as a Black woman journalist, the opinion page is all too often the only forum where the "real journalism" (or lack thereof) of white journalists gets challenged.

Let's take the *ahem* Washington Post and Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech.

I teach on the mythologizing of American journalism's supposed noble origins in my Race, Media & International Affairs class.

For a good chunk of American newspaper history, stretching to colonial papers-- there was sensationalizing, unverified news, and papers that actively called for violence!

Did you know this? I didn't know this.

Exactly.

Also, let's say you, avid car/SUV/monster truck driver in no way could *ever* cycle anywhere — cool, you do you.

Wouldn't it benefit you if people who *can* cycle/walk/take transit do so, thus freeing road space for you and those like you? What's the problem?

I never got the stock boomer "I hate my spouse" humor. Whaddaya mean I get to see my favorite human every day? We sleep in the same bed, we're always there for each other, we do our favorite activities together, and they're there when I wake up? Fuckin' awesome!

Who is Péter Magyar, the man leading the polls as Hungary prepares for election? Former Viktor Orbán loyalist and his Tisza party have enjoyed meteoric rise as opposition movement grows

This article shows clearly how low the bar is when it comes to countering the mainstreaming of far-right politics

Sure, Magyar is less worse than Orban but he's a former Fidesz loyalist, he is further right on immigration and he's in line on many other issues

/whispers

Péter Magyar was a key member of Fidesz, Tisza is a conservative nationalist party, and they’re pretty reactionary about immigration, so Hungary is far from out of the woods and liberal democracy at best merely delays fascism

/loudly

But it’s okay to be happy that Orbán got stomped!

I’m glad Orban’s toast. But I’d caution anyone getting particularly excited about his opponent. Magyar is not a good guy;

“During a campaign stop in Bicske, Magyar claimed that Filipino workers at a Samsung factory in Göd have been eating ducks and goldfish they have captured from the Budapest Zoo”

Magyar says he’s starting work with the EU and NATO immediately.

“The EU doesn’t have to worry anymore.”

So we can now expect Hungary to drop the veto on Ukrainian EU accession and on financial aid.

JD Vance is America’s Liz Truss. She killed the Queen. He killed the Pope and now, metaphorically, Viktor Orbán.

When hope is restored in the UK, and the grip of wealth and influence no longer stymies social justice, there will be accountability - including for Starmer, Streeting, and Cooper

There will be hope for a better future - but little forgiveness for those who have used power to harm the marginalised

Clive Lewis: “Since 2010, tens of billions have been stripped from local authority budgets. That deliberate erosion created the perverse logic we see now – councils so hollowed-out that handing critical public functions to private tech firms gets dressed up as ‘efficiency'"

The last 24 hours have shown what many have said for a long time.

Britain's role as an accomplice to Trump's America must end.

We must urgently decouple from a rogue US & seek security with allies closer to home. That starts with suspension of the US bombers on British soil.

Computers do not understand nuance, context, and relevance—the things alt text is needed for. And I do not believe this can possibly improve, at least currently, because of what a computer intrinsically IS.

1 week ago 93 12 2 0

The most destructive intersection of alt text and AI isn’t that the former is being used to train the latter.

It’s that people are really excited to use AI to produce alt text, which it is generally very bad at, and expect blind folks to be grateful for it, even though it’s shit.
